Not many stories get written,
that are ever read!!,
but I had to write this one,
it's so sweet
and so meaningful.
It brought tears to my eyes,
and a remberance
I will never forget.

As I stood
at the water's edge
and tested the temperature,
I decided to return to my
blanket on the beach
and feel the
warm sun apon my body.
I gazed out across
the vast ocean and spotted
what appeared
to be a young girl
playfully enjoying
the ocean wav's.
She waved
and was yelling to me,
"Please come and play with me",
So I braved the chillness
of the water and proceeded
to swim out towards her.
She smiles as we meet,
"Hello", she say's,
my name is Rachel
and I am a Mermaid",
I said hello back
and my name is Kristine
and I am a mortal.
We laughed.
We swam and frockled
like children,
riding the wav's
with our bodies,
diving to the bottom carrying
hands full of sand
up as proof.
We floated and watched
the clouds pass over us,
making pictures out of some.
Rachel then speaks,
"I have not always
been a mermaid.
Once I was like you",
I responded and asked
how she happened
to become a mermaid.
She tells of
three years ago being
on the beach,
when she spotted
other young girls swimming
and calling for her
to join them.
She swam and swam
but it didn't bring
her close to them,
and she started to tire,
and then the voices
went silent.

Suddendly
they appeared around me,
"she states",
they said "Come with us",
I told them
I could not come,
they said yes you can,
"Try",
we will help you.
they took my arms
and pulled me down
deeper and deeper
until I passed out.
I awoke on the beach,
my legs had been
replaced by a tail.
I knew if I didnt
hurry back to the water
I would surely die,
the tide came,
and took me back
to the sea.
I have been here
ever since.
As we talked
I noticed a man standing
on the beach,
motioning for us
to come to the shore.
I said to Rachel,
"is he calling you",
"No, she responded,
but I shall go and see.
She swam toward the shore
and I followed her.
The deepth
has lessened now,
which made it impossible
to swim any further.
I stood, but Rachel
continued sliding
her body on the ocean bottom.
"Let me help you",
I said.
No, she says I am fine.
The man leaned down
to help her,
she pulled away,
I can do this,
her voice now broken,
and her eyes flowing
of tears.
She tries to stand
but fails,
the man who obiviously
is her Father leans down
again and picks her
up into his arms,
he cradles her close
to his chest and
she lays her head
on him and weeps.
He turns,
and then
I see why Rachel
is a mermaid,
her tiny little feet
lay twisted and deformed
against her Father's side.
I never did
see Rachel again,
but her memory
and her joy for life
will last me a lifetime.
she gave me a gift
that I can never
re-pay back.
The gift,
you can be
anything you want,
all you have to do
is want it badly enough.
