Ireland and its culture have always interested me and I have a strong love for its music and literature. The beauty of Ireland's music and art have always intrigued me and reflect the integrity of its people. It is a country full of contrasts and beauty. Dublin is a modern cosmopolitan city with the charm of a Georgian city and the west of Ireland has rural simplicity. Sit a spell in explore the Irish sites I have found interesting and find a bit of Ireland for yourself. I have a cousin who has lived in Ireland for a period of time as well as several friends who are from Éire. They have all taught me to appreciate my Irish heritage and this page is representative of that labor of love. My cousin, Kevin Galegher, has graciously allowed me share a handful of his photos from his most recent trip to Ireland.

An Gorta Mór or The Great Famine was the catastrophic potato failure in Ireland and elsewhere between 1845 - 1851. There were failures of the potato crop around the world but the results of these failures was the most destructive in Ireland. The failure of the potato crops resulted in widespread hunger and starvation. The potato was the primary staple of poor tenant farmers. The year of 1847 marked the most devasting year to the Irish. More people died from hunger, were forced off the land or emigrated to North America, Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand and other locations than in any other year in this time frame. In 1840, Ireland had a population of 8 million and in less than twenty years, her population was barely 4 million. Ireland has never recovered from this bloodletting. It is a period of history that has irrevocably changed the face of Ireland forever. 1997 marks the 150th anniversary of 1847, known as Black 47.

Peace is obtainable if we all work together and wish with our prayers and our hearts. I am hoping that someday soon that there will peace in Ireland and an end to ALL sectarian violence and that the Irish people can live in peace. Let's give peace a chance!
