"useless is a group that stretches their music waaay out there!"

useless was first formed tentatively in 1998 when guitarist chris wilke and drummer/vocalist paul fredette decided to ignore the reasonable advice of most folks and start working on original material. we had previously worked together in local groups The Bridge and Merco Bean. although both of these bands had performed some original songs alongside standard cover songs, we've always felt we were never able to make the contribution to music we'd always wanted.

after getting together a number of times, an outline of where the band was going began to emerge: why not take advantage of our varied backgrounds backgrounds? we'd always loved to improvise; why not make that an integral part of the performance? we've both always appreciated the craftmanship and subtle interplay of the parts of "classical" composers such as j.s. bach. and of course, we'd both grown up on rock. why not roll it all up into one? so there you have it - music that is equally influenced by Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Miles, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Schubert, Bach, Schoenberg, Black Sabbath. you know, nothing you don't hear on the radio everyday. provided you have three radio stations on at once, you might get a close approximation of our sound. we know what you're thinking, but don't get scared now! we're pretty conscious that we don't come off of as an eclectic mess. (unless we want it to sound messy - actually, we might as well admit it, we don't have clue as to what we're doing. better leave this sort of thing to musical geniuses like prince) but anyway, that's how we came up with the name "rockjazzclasical" to describe our music. it's sure a lot better than "progressive rock", don't you think?
