Chapter 4: The Right To Say No
"So Baby, being in the business yourself, what do you think of the place?" Sandy asked. Lilia was seated at a long table, with Damon, Jacki, Paul, Sandy and the Backstreet Boys. The restaurant they were in was virtually empty, with them and four other people in it.
"Well, despite it's horrible location and decor that's about as charming as dirty socks, the food is wonderful and you have to appreciate the service with a smile," Lilia said.
"In the business? You work in a restaurant?" Howie asked. Lilia smiled at his assumption and shook her head.
"No, I own a night club. If you guys are ever in T.O. for awhile, check out Genuine, best place in town," she said proudly.
"You own a night club? Wow, that's incredible. Well, it's just that you're-"
"So young? Yeah, I get that a lot. But I was practically raised in the place, been working there since I was fifteen," Lilia said.
"Wow, must be nice to already know what you're going to be doing with your life, and have such a head start," Kevin interjected.
"It's great. But you guys, you have all the excitement," Lilia said, her eyes sparkling as she thought about the adventure that Premiere was about to embark on.
"It's not all excitement," AJ said.
"But you guys not only get to travel all over the world, meet famous people at award shows and stuff, but you get to do it all doing something you love, like singing. If that's not exciting then you're in the wrong profession," Lilia said. Sandy nudged her, afraid that she would insult the Boys.
"You're getting a little carried away there, Baby. Just calm down," Sandy whispered. Lilia sighed.
"Hey, they have Kareoke here!" Jacki said. The table started buzzing.
"Hey we should all do a song!" Sandy suggested.
"Do you think that's a good idea? I mean, you guys are, like, the Backstreet Boys and stuff," Damon said.
"Look at this place, it's deserted. Nobody will make a big deal out of it. And if it looks like they're going to, then we'll leave," Jacki said. Everyone agreed with that. Then they all began listing the songs that they would like to sing.
"What are you going to sing, Lilia?" Jacki asked. Lilia froze. A silence seemed to fall over the table.
"I can't," Lilia whispered. Paul tried glaring at Jacki to get her off the subject, but Jacki either didn't see it or she ignored it.
"Sure you can. You don't want to be the only one not doing it, do you?" Jacki persisted.
"I don't care about that. I just can't," Lilia said determinedly, trying to hide her immense fear. She was trembling. The tension in the room mounted as Jacki would not give up.
"C'mon Baby, let's see what you can do," Jacki said snidely.
"I just can't. Please...I can't," Lilia whispered. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Lilia's face burned as her vision started to blur with tears she could no longer supress.
"Jacki, just drop it," Paul ordered. Jacki shrugged her shoulders and turned to talk to Nick, who had his gaze firmly affixed on Lilia. Everyone started talking again, but Lilia remained frozen, her lip trembling, gazing intently forward. Paul leaned over to her.
"Are you okay, Baby?" he asked tenderly. She didn't answer him. Sudden deciding that she could stay there no longer, she pushed back her chair, dropped her napkin on the table and walked out of the restaurant.
"What was that all about?" Nick asked, leaning over the table.
"Jacki, you know about Lilia. You shouldn't have asked her to sing," Paul said, his anger with Jacki showing clearly in his words.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to find out if she could still belt out a note or two," Jacki said innocently, then turned to make conversation with Howie, apparently not feeling guitly for the stress she had caused Lilia.
"Nick, you'll have to ask Lilia about that. I wouldn't feel right about it if I told you," Paul explained. Nick nodded and looked out the window, in the direction that she had gone.
"You think she'll find the hotel okay?" he asked, turning back to Paul.
"Yeah, sure. It's just down the road, she'll be fine," Paul reassured him.
