Chapter 8: Still
"Hi Lilia," Brian said as found her backstage.
"Hi Brock," she answered. He paused for a moment, and then decided to correct her.
"It's B-Rok," he said.
"I know. But I don't like B-Rok," she said.
"You're a very difficult person, aren't you?" he asked. He should be insulted considering that she just dissed his nickname, but she was so blunt about it, it was hard to be.
"When you're good at something…Actually, it's incentive. Get your friend Nick to stop calling me 'Lily' and you'll be 'Brock' no longer," she offered.
"No deal. Don't drag me into your fights. He won't stop, I assure you. I suggest acceptance," he said, amused.
"Damn. You were my only hope," she said, sighing. Brian smiled and patted her on the back as he walked away. She sat, waiting for Paul to finish his meeting with Jordan, because he had promised that the two of them would go out for lunch together. She was getting bored, when she heard footsteps and turned her attention towards them.
"Nick," she said, when he entered the room.
"Oh, hi Lily," he said with an air of distraction. Despite his cool attitude, Lilia could feel the electricity crackle in the air. There was something between the two of them, that she was sure of, even if it were only electricity.
"How are you today?" she asked, feeling ridiculous. She was never one for small talk.
"I'm fine. How are you?"
"Just peachy. So, uh…are you happy to be moving on to the next town tomorrow?" she asked.
"Yeah, sure. Why not?" he asked, still studiously ignoring her. The tension in the room was too much for Lilia, she snapped.
"Okay, so do you want to talk? Like serious people?" she said. He met her eyes.
"Why would we want to do that?" he asked. Lilia was speechless. It was a good question and she had no idea what to say to it.
"Why not?" she said, then wanted to throw herself out a window. It was the only thing she could think of, and as far as being an "adult", her remark had probably destroyed any sincerity she could have gained. But it looks as if someone was willing to give her a break, because he smiled.
"What do you want to talk about?" he asked, sitting down across from her. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"I just want to know one thing. Do you…well, do you think that we used each other?" she asked carefully, biting her lip. A moment of silence followed.
"No, I don't think we did, Lily," he said quietly.
"How do you know? How can we be sure?" she asked.
"There would have been nothing, no feeling. It would have just been empty. But I'm pretty sure there was something there," he whispered.
"You do?" she asked quietly, unable to remove her gaze from his eyes, trying to seek her answer there.
"Yeah. What about you?"
"Me too. There was something there."
"Was? Still is?" He was slowly moving towards her, and now his forehead was so close to hers, she could almost feel it pressing against hers. He was waiting for her answer.
"Still is," she answered honestly. It was that answer he wanted. He leaned in and softly kissed her, pure gentleness. Closing her eyes, Lilia reached out to him, drawing him in, running her hands through his hair, enjoying the moment. Gentleness gave way to fireworks and heat, and they pulled apart, breathless with amazement over what they had experienced.
"Wow," Lilia breathed. Smiling, Nick reached out and held her hand, and they sat in silence, just staring into each other's eyes.
"Aww, isn't that cute?" a voice called obnoxiously behind them.
"Well, 'cuz wow," another voiced rang out, mocking Lilia's comment. Nick and Lilia's eyes widened as they turned around and discovered that they had an audience comprised of the Boys, Premiere and a few other people. Lilia grimaced in mortification and was ready to spout some anger their way, when Nick whispered into his ear.
"Good idea, Nick. I do commend you on that," she responded, then smile wickedly in Paul's direction.
"Uh-oh. I know that look," Paul called. Simultaneously, Nick and Lilia jumped up and ran to the cooler that was near them. Grabbing handfuls of dripping ice, they proceeded to recreate the scene that Lilia remembered as her second day in the company of this crazy bunch.
