"Did it ever make you cry?"
Here's an essay I wrote for my local newspaper when they asked who your role model is.
Sad to say that it didn't make the paper, at least I tried!
There are many role models I look up and most of them are singer-songwriters I listen to. Besides my mother and sister, I also look up to Liz Phair, Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow. Sheryl Crow tops my list as being my role model.

It was through Sheryl Crow's music is where I opened my eyes and took a good look at the real world outside fo my limited boundaries. "Redemption Day" is one song I was attached to because it talked about the senseless killings resulted from land mines and war. This song remains to be a favorite of mine because my feelings (about such killings) are expressed in this song.

Another song of Sheryl's where she made me open my eyes is "Love is a Good Thing." The lyrics in this song is the reason why her second album, titled Sheryl Crow, was banned from Wal-Mart's shelves. I still applaud her for refusing to change her lyrics just so the so the would carry her album. It sets a good example of an artist to stand by their work and to keep it that way. When she said, "Watch our children while they kill each other with guns they bought at Wal-Mart's discount stores," I was outraged to see that this was so true and find myself shopping at Wal-Mart less frequently.

Sheryl's story of surviving personal hardships and the backlash of critics is what makes me admire her so much. Although most of the reviews of her newest album, The Globe Sessions, have been really good, most critics weren't so kind to her first two albums. Of course she took it seriously and I can totally relate to this story. Whenever I hear of the personal hardhips she struggled through, it always made me cry and want to give her a big hug to tell her it will be all right. I know she did make it ok because I feel she's saying the same thing to me through her music.

My life changed when I bought Sheryl Crow's cd. She's a really god songwriter and musical performer and has accomplished so much in her short successful career. Not only can she sing and play music, she also produces music and was the first woman to be nominated for a best producer Grammy. There are so many things Sheryl has done that make me look up to her and call her my role model, but I know I wouldn't be able to list them all.

Sheryl has been the only musician that can make me cry everytime I listen to her music because her beautiful voice in the songs touch me in a way. And critics thought her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club, would be a one-hit wonder.
