DEAD PERIOD BEGINS NOVEMBER 1
August 24, 2000 - With the start of school basketball just two months away, it's time for a reminder about the NC AAU "dead period" for school age players. From the first day of school practice, or from November 1, 2000, whichever comes first, until the last game of the school season including conference tournaments and state championship playoffs, no NC AAU team may hold a practice, open gym, try out, or any other type of basketball workout or competition with any player whose school team is still playing. This applies to middle school, junior high school and high school players in both public and private schools.
Last year there were several reports of violations of this rule, but we did not have the time or resources to investigate. This year, all complaints will be investigated, and coaches found to have knowingly and willfully violated this rule will be subject to penalties up to and including suspension from coaching in AAU sanctioned events for a period of time as determined by the NC AAU Girls' Basketball Committee Board of Review.
This rule does not apply to 2000-2001 teams in the 10U (born in 1990) and 11U (born in 1989) age groups as these girls are generally 6th grade or lower and do not play school ball. In areas where the middle school basketball season extends past March 15th, tryouts and practices for 12U and 13U teams can begin in late February and include affected players ONLY on weekends, as long as the AAU event does not interfere with an event planned by the school coach.
