the main characters of The
Pretender are
(warning: spoilers up to season four finale)
Jarod,
the genius who can become anyone he wants to be. Jarod was taken
by the Centre as a child and trained to be a "pretender." He was
denied contact with his family and used for Centre research, which has
contributed to questionable acts. Now, Jarod is free and in search
of his family. Unfortunately, the Centre wants him back and will
stop at nothing to capture him. Jarod has been able to track down
members of his family, only to lose them again. His mother is presently on the run. His brother Kyle was killed by Mr. Lyle, a Centre
employee and Miss Parker's twin. Major Charles, Jarod's father, recently helped his son rescue daughter Emily, who is recuperating from a murder attempt (all fingers point to Lyle). There is a Jarod child clone somewhere, who was rescued and hidden by Major Charles. And we have learnt of a new possible half-brother, the child of Catherine Parker. Just imagine how complicated family reunions would be if Jarod were to track them all down! We, of course, don't really know if Jarod's parents are his biological ones. The character of Jarod
is played by Michael T. Weiss.
Miss
Parker, Jarod's former childhood friend. Miss Parker is the daughter
of the former Centre Director. She has mixed feelings about her role
in the institution, yet has chosen to track down Jarod. When the
search began, Miss Parker was promised her freedom for Jarod's. That
deal, however, might no longer be valid since her father is no longer the
Director. Miss Parker's mother, Catherine, died when she was young.
Soon after his escape, Jarod informed Miss Parker that Catherine was murdered
by someone at the Centre (this has become an even more complicated question after the season four finale). Since then, Miss Parker has made it her
personal crusade to find out the truth. Her relationship to Jarod
is complicated, alternating between friendship, resentment, envy, love,
hate. Miss Parker is also a pretender, but she wasn't trained and
her skills are unexplored. There is also a question as to who is
Miss Parker's real father. Miss Parker is played by Andrea Parker.
Sydney,
Jarod's former mentor and trainer at the Centre. Sydney is the only
parental figure Jarod had as a child. Although they are both fond
of each other, Sydney has chosen to remain working for the Centre and aid
in Jarod's capture. During the second World War, Sydney and his deceased
twin brother Jacob were prisoners in a German concentration camp.
Later both brothers came to work for the Centre. Recently, thanks
to Jarod, Sydney learnt that he had fathered a son with a former co-worker,
Michele. His son, Nicolas, has recently entered Sydney's life.
Sydney is also very fond of Miss Parker, who is like a daughter to him.
Sydney is played by Patrick Bauchau.
Broots,
a technology expert. Broots is perhaps the most normal of all the
characters. He doesn't have a long history with the Centre and has
a life outside it. He is the father of a young girl, Debbie.
Broots always tries to do the right thing, but his job prevents him from
it. He is usually mistreated by his employees, but quite indespensable
in their search for Jarod. Broots has a crush on Miss Parker and recently
told her how he feels, unfortunately his affection is not returned.
At times, just like his two co-workers, Broots has aided Jarod. The
character of Broots is played by Jon Gries.
Other characters include
Angelo, another Pretender imprisioned by the Centre, who aids Jarod from within. Angelo is also an empath and due to a cruel experiment, is unable to interact with others or express himself well. Yet, he is a kind soul that strives to help his friends. Angelo is played by Paul Dillon.
Mr. Lyle, also a pretender. He is a powerful man at the Centre and his loyalties are unknown. He is Miss Parker's twin brother, but he was taken from his mother as a newborn. Mr. Lyle is a sinister man, who is responsible for the rape and murder of several young women. Jamie Denton plays Mr. Lyle.
Dr. Raines, a demented and cruel "scientist". Dr. Raines is responsible for the creation of cruel experiments at the Centre. A powerful man, he is Jarod's worst nightmare. Recently, it's been hinted that Dr. Raines is responsible for Catherine Parker's death, but is it true? This scary Mr. Hyde is brought to life by Richard Marcus.
Mr. Parker is the sinister Director of the Centre. He has a troubling relationship with all his children and might have been involved in his first and second wives' deaths. We know little of Mr. Parker and his true motivations, but we do know that Herr Director always looks out for number one. Mr. Parker is portrayed by Harve Presnell.
Brigitte, a former cleaner and femme fatale. Brigitte wed Mr. Parker a few years ago and apparently expired when giving birth to their baby. Paternity is in question; and so is her death. No one really dies at the Centre, or do they? Brigitte is portrayed by Pamela Gridley.
