Evelyn Tan hits the right chord with listeners

FAST-RISING TCS actress Evelyn Tan seems to be hitting all the right notes in her singing career as well.

Two months after launching her debut solo album, Eve, plans are under way to release a second one.

According to Hype Records, Eve has sold about 18,000 copies since its launch in November.

Given that Fann Wong's Shopping album has sold about 25,000 three months after its release and that Zoe Tay's 10/10 album has hit 20,000 since it was put on sale at the end of October, Tan is doing very well indeed.

On her impending second album, she said: "I've been told to keep up with my voice-training lessons, and recording will begin in October or November."

She spend last Saturday evening with a gathering of her fans at the Singapore Zoological Gardens.

Scheduled originally as an outdoor campfire, the event had to be held in a pavilion because of a heavy downpour.

Though smaller than the expected 500, the turnout of about 200, mostly teenagers and children with their parents in tow, did not let the rain put a damper on their mood.

Camera flashes and frenzied screams of "Yuyun! Yuyun!" (Tan's Chinese name) greeted the 24-year-old star as she made her appearance at the event organised by TCS, Singapore Press Holdings and Hype Records.

And the new darling of Caldecott Hill, who bagged the Most Popular Newcomer title and took her place among the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes in last year's Star Awards, made sure her fans had made a worthwhile trip.

During the one and a half hour mini-concert, which ended with Tan joining her supporters on a tour of the Night Safari, she had them singing and clapping along as she performed songs such as Say I Love You and Whole-heartedly from her album.

She also belted out a few English numbers like La Bamba and Stand By Me.

The cheery actress also bantered good-naturedly with the audience, fielding questions deftly such as "Why are you so pretty?" and "Would you consider me as your boyfriend?" in her characteristic unassuming way.

As Joseph Yee, 17, who was there with seven other friends, put it, this is her best asset: "She's so friendly and approachable, there are no airs about her."

Though Tan has found her soaring popularity a little overwhelming, her professionalism showed when she said: "I will now demand more from myself to match the expectations my supporters have of me."

This assurance will, no doubt, be music to her fans' ears.
