In her latest
appearance in TCS 8 blockbuster Wok of Life, Evelyn Tan lands a great part to prove some
of her best talents! Not only does the actress have a chance to show off her thespian
skills, she also sings nine of the 15 tracks available on the serial's soundtrack, as well
as performs a sizz-
ling-hot A-go-go dance sequence with
co-star Flo-
rence Tan! Ni-cole Lam meets the girl who does
everything. Acting
"It's strange how I keep ending up in
these 'cabaret' related roles! After the fun time I had while I was doing Beauty World,
my role in Wok of Life actually gives me the chance to per-
form on stage! In the serial, I play this character called Lin Zhen
Zhen who gets transported back in time to the sixties together with childhood chum You
Yong Fu (Chew Chor Meng). She eventually becomes great pals with a stage singer played by
Florence Tan, and the duo decide later to pair up as the A-go-go sisters! Needless to say,
there'd be many scenes in the serial of Florence and myself, having a great time singing
and dancing!
I enjoy the role a lot, though Zhen Zhen is
a little blur, I'd say. In the first half of the serial especially, she's actually lost
her memory, so she goes around doing every single crazy thing that she's told. Fortunately
Zhen Zhen does regain her memory a while later and subsequently proves to be the
brainy type who'd come up with brilliant ideas every
once in a while!
I'm already looking forward to my next acting project,
tentatively called Wu Long Dang An. I hear shooting for the serial would take me to
Kuala Lumpur for a couple of months...hmm, that should be fun!"
Singing
"Singing for the serial's soundtrack
was rather challenging! A lot of the Mandarin oldies are what I'd called 'totally ex-
pressive' about feelings. Like that track 'Wo Yao Ni De Ai', wow,
isn't the protagonist in the song really direct with how she feels about the guy! I mean,
part of the chorus literally goes, "I want, I want, I want you...." It's good
that I've learnt to overcome my initial shyness as a person these days!
Other than this, I'm currently compiling some materials for my
second album. I'm still in the midst of trying to compose some tunes, but I really am not
too confident if they're good enough to be used eventually. I'll just keep trying, and
we'll see how it goes."
Dancing
"I'm really not much of a dancer in
rea-
lity! I hardly frequent pubs or parties where I'd get to
dance....besides, the dance sequence required in the Wok of Life is A-go-go. I'd
imagine most young people would need some lessons on this! But I'm proud to at least be
able to call myself a fast learner. Florence and I only spent about three hours during a
crash course to pick up the steps!
Well, now that filming for Wok of Life has finally
wrapped, I'd be on leave for a month and going for a short break. Finally, I get to spend
some time doing.....nothing! But I might be thinking of heading down for Australia though,
to attend a relative's wedding. I can't wait!"
