Kender Villages Of The Desolation

Welcome to my first article...
Kender villages come in two types: 1) Mobile caravans designed to move over many terrain types.
2) Permanent villages which either owe fealty to Malystryx or one of her servants
or have some powerful magic item which hides the village from Dragon detection.
As must seem obvious, most permanent villages operate as spies for malys...
They offer up their freedom in return for their lives and stability...

The village of Burnttoes:

This village is named for the 'mayor', a kender normally called Tranin Quickfist
but after he dictated to a red dragon an alternate presentation of its parentage, including
Gully Dwarves among them, this lead to his new nickname, and a tendency for him to abjectly apologise when
people get angry.
His clan founded this village shortly after the toasting of Kendermore, and quickly decided to build an emergency burrow
when red dragons serving Malys came calling.
The village also boasts a watch tower made from a blue dragon's skull
and a warning gong fashioned from plate mail left behind by very dead Solamnics.
There are currently 30 kender in this village, but should they be introduced to magic
they may have the means to protect themselves until they can breed.
The weaponry in this village is crude but plentiful. Built as the village is,
upon, and made from, many bones, assume kender 'warriors' from this village to be clubs.

Fortunately for the Kender, they have a semi mystic called Thrush
who has the sphere of Healing, which is the only reason the mayor
is still alive...
She is acutely aware that she could die soon, and she is vainly
trying to teach healing to the other Kender.
However, spiritualism is to boring for these kender...

The Kender village of Bonedown:
This village is a small crop of underground houses built beneath
The skull of a large Red dragon. Its mysterious leader, The Evil One
(Well, kender go in for mild exaggerations, BUT he once snapped at a child...)
specialises in Necromancy in an attempt to keep troublesome visitors away
these kender have come to value their privacy.
They have also been hardened by their need to scavenge for food
and are not above eating dead adventurers...
Currently the Evil One is attempting to animate the dragon skull
in an attempt to scare dragons away.
Other important villagers is their captured Troll champion
who has somehow been domesticated as a savage guard dog...
Recent happenings include the discovery of a stick which appears
capable of launching lightning bolts...
Could this be Dalamar's Wand of Lightning?

The Village of RedWing:

This is one of the largest villages in the Desolation, with an
estimated 1000 Kender. The reason they give to adventurers is their
Cabal, a group of 10 fledgling 'wizards'. In fact, these Kender have only
succeeded at Spectramancy, and they use it to create flashy 'spells' from
other spheres.
The REAL reason Malys leaves them alone is the fact that they have sworn
Loyalty to her. They do minor tasks for her such as polishing her scales
and reporting on any magical items or adventurers they come across.
Sometimes when she has a bad day, they have to perform extra tasks
in order to keep her approval.
On these occasions they send teams of Kender to steal valuable items from
other lands...
Assume these Kender to be better equipped than anyone else in the desolation.

Layout of the village:
There is a large 'hall' at the centre constructed from animal skins,
and there is a large housing area clustered around this hall.
There is a small shrine to Branchala maintained in a 'Town Square',
where Kender congregate during stressful times.
However, for most visitors, the most striking feature is the
Bone Wall. This was constucted during the Dragon Purge using
dead dragons dragged into place using geomancy (there used to be
a Geomancer Kender, but one night he became so scared by the thought
of Malys that he created a magical tunnel to escape the Desolation.)

The Village of the Supreme Kender Lord of Krynn:

Living in a wasteland can do things to people.
Survival instincts can lead to a decay of morals, and of hygiene standards.
Eventually the people in the wastelands resort to extreme tactics in an effort to remain alive.
This village is an example.
Living particularly near a lake of sulphurous fumes, and prevented from growing crops by a continuous cloud of black smoke that drifts from Malystryx's mountain,
the Kender residents of this village have taken up such methods as cannabalism.
Many of them are not even recognisably humane. They certainly are not sane.
The 'Lord' of this village is a megalomaniac Kender who wishes to depose Malys, and then set about conquering Krynn himself.
The way she [yes, she. Dont ask me why she calls herself lord.] sees it, Kender have too long been repressed.
Now they shall be the lords.
This village is actually quite large, almost three hundred residents...
They survive by killing and eating Draconian minions of Malys and other dragons, and by luring in adventurers by promise of treasure and glory.
They then eat said adventurers.
They get their vegetables etc. through the use of temporary undead servants who are sent to raid caravans etc. near Malys's realm.
Somehow they seem to have found a way of extending spell lengths without suffering consequences...
Worse still, the 'lord' has quite some personal power, and should have code A's in several abilities, despite her Kender status...
She has so far been proven to be a competent Necromancer, Pyromancer, Aeromancer, Enchanter, Diviner, Healer, and Summoning.
Notice anything odd about that list of spheres? That's right. She has too many. Do have fun when you visit this village.
They do a nice line in Steak ala hero.

As you will know if you have seen my Dragonlance campaign, Malystryx has been killed by brave adventurers.
This had something to do with the fact that she had the most powerful magic items in a big pile...
Anyway, these villages are now rallying themselves to depose the minor dragons in the Desolation, not that Malys cannot save them.
In addition, some of the villages are sending out emmissaries to locate other villages, form treaties, and to discuss what to do next.
It is generally agreed that they are going to send diplomats to Hylo requesting aid.
