The Dean of Heidelberg College Japan, Dr. Richard D. McClain, is also the Headmaster at the Hokkaido International School where you can send him e-mail. He was a principal in Indiana for several years before coming to Sapporo in 1991 and had also been an athletic director in the Dominican Republic. He has a Master of Science from Butler University and a Doctorate in Education from Nova University. The Mid-State Athletic Conference voted him "Coach" of the year in 1970 and Gideons International voted him "Educator of the Year" in 1981. Dr. McClain is pictured left with two Heidelberg students.
C.A. Edington (pictured right) was the ESL Director at HCJ from September, 1995, through March, 1999, and has been in Sapporo around 12 years. She now operates her own school, CAÕs Academy of English. She has two Master's degrees, one in Theatre from the University of Denver, and one in TESL from Hawaii University. Kathleen Riggins was the librarian at Heidelberg for over 7 years. She is also the librarian at Hokkaido International School. She has an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Iowa. She and her husband are the owners of New Day School and just opened a used book store in Sapporo. You can see a picture of our librarian with her class here. Joseph Karuzis (pictured below right with Jan Ohno) taught at Heidelberg from April, 1998, to January, 1999. He is from Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from Boston University with a major was philosophy. In addition, Joseph received a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Boston College. His favorite philosopher is Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.
Joseph has lived in Sapporo for over two years. His hobbies are sports, especially snowboarding and mountain biking, photography and art. He works out a few times a week at a sports club in Chuo-ku. He is also interested in studying Japanese and enjoys Japanese food, sushi and onigiri in particular. You can reach him by sending e-mail to Joseph.
Part-time instructor Jan Ohno (pictured above with Joseph) got her B.A. from University of Arizona and her M.A. from Middle Tennessee State University. She took a special intensive course in France the summer of 1998 in ordered to her teaching certification. You can e-mail Jan for more information about her trip.
In April, 1998, Noriko Okazaki (pictured left) came to HCJ as the new Office Administrator. She was born in Sapporo; however, when she was two years old, she moved to Montreal, Canada, where she lived for ten years. When she was in 7th grade, she came back to Japan, to Kobe. Therefore, the first Japanese she learned was the Kansai dialect, even though she was born in Sapporo. When she was a 3rd year student in junior high, she came back to Sapporo and entered Fuji Women's Junior High School. After she graduated from Fuji Women's College, she worked at Seishin Sacred Heart Women's School as an English teacher for 4 years. After that, she went to Portland State University in Oregon.
She is a member of the Sapporo Academy Chorus with C.A. She is also good at sports, especially Kendo (Japanese fencing) and basketball. When Noriko was in college, she belonged to the Kendo club.
