This is such a typical picture of my husband Steven, surrounded by kids or animals, they are all drawn to him.
Steve is a retired firefighter after 20 years of service.
This picture was taken several years ago by a newspaper reporter
at a brush fire in Norco, California. The fire had just turned
on him, he climbed through the barbed wire fence and
was literally running for his life.

This is Steve the "Daddy".
Four children of our own and three adoptions later, he is a full time Daddy.
In 1988, 5 year old
Rebecca came to live with us as a foster child.
Within a year her parents had disappeared and shortly thereafter
we started our first adoption proceedings.
In 1990, nine month old
Mikey
came to live with us.
We had explained to our five children, that he was only going to
stay with us until a "nice family could adopt him". Well, it
didn't happen that way. We turned out to be that "nice family".
Within 3 days, Steven announced that Mikey wasn't going anywhere,
we were going to adopt him. So off to adoption court we went,
for the second time.
In 1993 we adopted our last child
Kristal.
Because of Steven's work schedule, he had been Mikey's main caretaker
so he just naturally took on this baby too. By this time he'd
become a regular Mr. Mom. Kristal came to us when she was 6 days old.
She was an alcohol syndrome baby, developmentally delayed with
seizures and on an apnea monitor. None of that fazed Steven.
He just took over and gave her the love and attention she so
desperately needed. Today she is a healthy, happy little girl.
Steven has a very simple theory about life and children...
Every child has the right to have parents to love and cherish them.
It breaks our hearts knowing that there are so many unwanted children that could be adopted.
A couple of years ago we had gone to some auto races with some friends who had foster children. Steven had sat next to a six year old little girl that lived with them.
He teasingly asked her "and who do you belong to little girl?"
She sadly replied "I don't belong to anyone, I'm a foster kid."
Steven had to turn away so she wouldn't see the tears in his eyes.
