Congratulations!

The Thunderbird Rovers are especially proud of two of our members who have been honoured with the Reginald K. Groome Memorial ScholarshipJohn Temesi received the award in its inaugural year, 1997, and Michael Logan received the award in 1999.

The scholarship is presented by the Scouts Canada Trust to a handful of members of Scouts Canada in recognition of their academic excellence, achievement in and service to Scouting, and other community service.

John has an excellent record.  He is a Chief Scout, Queen's Venturer, and holds the Silver level Duke of Edinburgh's Award.  John attended CJ'93 in Kananaskis, Alberta, and served on the executive of the 81st Hamilton Venturer Company for a number of years.  John's commitment was also seen by his attendance at many Group Committee meetings.

In 1995-96, John went on a Rotary Club exchange to Denmark, and in 1996-97 participated in the Katimavik Programme - a programme sponsored by the federal government which supports service to community across Canada. During the year, John visited Dolbeu, Quebec, Edmonton, Alberta, and Wa Wa, Ontario.  He has also served many more communities, working as a lifeguard in Ontario and New Brunswick, serving the Canadian National Institute for the Blind as a volunteer, and has been on the executive of the UNB/STU Gay & Lesbian Alliance.

John had a stellar academic record both at Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton where he attended for four years, and at the University of New Brunswick, reaching the Dean's List every year.  Along with the Scouts Canada Trust Scholarship, John also received other scholarships including the Chancellor's Scholarship from the University of New Brunswick.  Currently, John is travelling in South-East Asia.

Mike is also a Chief Scout, Queen's Venturer and holder of the Gold Level Duke of Edinburgh's Award.  He has not only served on Crew executive, but also on Regional and Provincial Councils, and the ORC.  Mike also sat on the Kingston District Council, representing the Queen's Rovers and attended the 11th World Scout Moot.

Mike graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Civil Engineering.  Mike became very involved in serving the campus community.  He was a campus tour guide for the Student Recruitment office at Queen's, and in 1998, he was the chair of the Transfer & Exchange Welcoming Committee and organised the orientation week activities for all new upper year students at Queen's.  Mike was also involved in the National Concrete Canoe Competition and was on the executive of Queen's Christian Fellowship for 1999-2000.

Currently, Mike is technically a student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He is enrolled in the joint Masters of Civil Engineering & Urban Planning (MENG/MURP) degree programme, but has deferred his position for a year.  Instead of going to graduate school, Mike is working as a Junior Engineer at W.F. Baird & Associates Coastal Engineers in Oakville, Ontario.

Mike also had a good academic record for five years at Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton, and for one year at McMaster University where he attained Dean's List standing.   Mike should finish his BSc. this year, and hopes to earn his Masters degrees in Urban Planning and Civil Engineering.

More important than the accomplishments of either member, is the teamwork between them.  The best of friends for many years through school and Scouting, they have shared many experiences which in turn helped each of them to be presented with the scholarships.  Even over many kilometres, and different recent paths, John and Mike continue to be great friends.

Good Luck, and Congratulations!
