Day 15: Monday October 21st 1996

Marpha to Ghasa 2013 m

Decided to continue our trek without a rest day. Lots of wind and dust in the afternoon. We see orchards and large stone buildings of an agricultural project set up in 1996.

We leave the dessert like area and enter a forest. We walk through Tukuche 2391 m., admire some beautiful big homes with carved windows and balconies along the stone paved main street.

There seemed to be some misunderstanding over lunch. Someone came running after Ram requesting money. Ram refused and in a quiet way told him he was mistaken. We had not bought anything. He appeared very angry and it was the only time we heard anyone raise their voice on the whole trek.

There was a huge landslide and we had to follow a new trail. Very sandy and difficult. The marihuana is growing wild again. There are lots of water buffalos and ducks in the villages.

I walked ahead with Ram to make sure we got a place to stay that night at the Eagle's Nest. It had been a long day and we were later than usual getting to our destination. Terrain was fairly flat and I was able to keep up with Ram. He remarked on how strong I was ( meaning for my age!}. Hari stayed back to walk with Pauline.

Our room was again on the second floor. Hotel very clean and the garden is lovely. There is a tomato tree in the garden. This is a tree I had never heard of before. I was told it is a plant native to New Zealand.

We ate sitting on the floor in the kitchen. Had some great Rosti . It is a potato dish. They made it with lots of garlic. The grandfather was there minding the little girl of the couple running the hotel.. She had an apple and wanted to share it with me. It was not very clean but I ate it as felt I could not refuse and insult them. Oh my poor stomach. Deepak had remarked on our Western stomachs and advised us to stick to Dahl Bhat.
