Day 18: Thursday October 24th

Chitre to Hile

checkpointThis morning we finished the climb to Ghorepani, 2855 m. in a little over an hour. The streets are paved with large flat stones typical of conditions on this side of the pass. We stopped to rest and had tea at the lodge there. Two women were running the lodge as their men were away in the Indian army. A 2 year old toddler and a 5 month old baby in a cradle.

We signed in at the check post on the way out of the town, the last one on the circuit. There was a poster at the checkpoint about a lost American trekker. He had been trekking alone. Not a good idea.

We decided not to climb Poon Hill that morning. It was cloudy and couldn't have seen much anyway.

3,680 stepsDownhill now. Stopped at Nangethanti for lunch. Walked through the rhododendron forest .Huge old trees. Many people come here in the spring just to see these trees in bloom. Saw two kinds of monkeys, beautiful river streams. Walked ahead by myself for a while. I really liked being by myself but I got a bit nervous as was meeting a few locals. I decided to wait for the rest of the group as had read you are more apt to get robbed near the towns.

Continued downhill from Ulleri [2073] to Tikhedhunga [1577], 3680 steps down, down down. 3,680 steps

In the larger view of the picture on the left Pauline can be seen just coming into view at the top of the steps.

The photo on the right shows two cows going down the steps ahead of us and the town in the background.

We stopped at See you Lodge in Hile for the night around 5 p.m.
