Review:Director
Robert Zemekis (Forrest Gump, Contact,
Back To the Future) was able to pull off a major studio release
that was actually quite a risk for himself and actor Tom Hanks (Forrest
Gump, Philadelphia). The majority of the movie takes place on a
deserted island in which the only dialogue is the dialogue Hanks has
with himself and a volleyball he named Wilson. There is also no narration
to help the viewer get into the mind of Hanks character, and no film
score to distract from the unbearable isolation of being alone. Cast
Away doesn't succumb to the typical Hollywood ending either in which
Hanks very easily could have reunited with his wife. The film captures
this longing, disappointment, and pain perfectly in the final chapter.
