Ariyadasa Kandege's Homepage
Sri Lanka

the artist's homeland, former called "Ceylon" is a pearl in the Indian Ocean. The name "Sri Lanka" means "Shining Country", and so the people of this country show a shiny kindness that Ariyadasa Kandege still has preserved in himself after living many years in Germany.

The artist was born in the year 1950 in Rathgama, a fishery village at the south-west coast of Sri Lanka as the fourth of seven children. He spent his college time in Galle in Sri Lanka, where his father had a textile business. An education in hotel and restaurant management with several years of work experience in Sri Lanka finally smoothed the way to Germany in 1979 where he fulfilled his dream to study art at the University of Essen/ Germany.

Since his childhood Ariyadasa Kandege has been strongly influenced by the philosophy of Buddhism. Painting is his meditation that gives him inner peace in the stress of everyday life. His colourful painting style is influenced by his favourite painter Paul Gauguin. It is like Ariyadasa Kandege's thoughts and stories painted themselves on the canvas. His artwork reflects his fantasies, personal views and impressions on life, his love to the homeland and also his great love to his mother - in Sri Lanka a woman is a symbol of family and solidarity. In his pictures you can clearly see the longings and feelings of the artist. So you will find again and again pictures of poor families in villages, of sunny landscapes with hard working people as well as of the Ceylonese women in their daily work. In opposition stands a representation of figures in manifold ornamental forms that show dancing movements and females in the nude. Most of his work is painted in contrasts of light and dark and complimentary colours .

But the artist has lauded his second homeland of choice multiple times: a series of newer pictures show his solidarity with the German city "Essen" from different viewpoints and with much imagination. Painting is for Ariyadasa Kandege not only a way of expression but also a source of energy and relaxation.
