Thur There is a "Band in the Hat" as well as the usual open mic, if musicians want to, they can put their name in another hat and get drawn to play with people they have never played with before... sometimes it’s musical magic, sometimes it’s a train wreck, but it’s always entertaining... the whole thing starts over again at 8:30 or 9, with a second drawing, it’s especially helpful if you get off work late and can’t make it to the first open mic... musicians there are very welcoming.

Sweetwater

I have been to several open mics as a spectator (not a performer), it's a great way to see a lot of new musicians that don't have many gigs yet,  some are really good...  most are free,  some will charge $5 (which is really cheap)...  every open mic is different, and what works well for one artist won't work for another artist, so experiment and try several venues,  you may be surprised.

There is at least one open mic every day,  even on Friday, so try several...  so many artists just go to one or two.

Some venues have different open mics,  Freight & Salvage has two, Sweetwater also has two,  and Espresso Garden has three, each may be different so try several of them.

Many open mics have a "featured artist" for about 30 minutes, in fact I often go to open mics because of who is featured.

I know there are more open mics,  write me if you know of one.
