Previously the "Café Trompe L'oeil", known by locals as "Café T",
the name came from the French expression for the kind of art
used in the mural along the south wall by John Pugh,
the idiomatic translation is "to fool the eye"...
"Café T" had live acoustic music too.
It was later bought by Judy Hackett and named "Espresso Garden",
the beautiful trompe l'oeil mural stayed with this new owner.

NOTE - The Hacketts are leaving to go to their new farm in Wisconsin,
Judy is doing her last show on Friday evening 16 Dec,
and her last day is Thursday 22 Dec 2005,
Espresso Garden is changing ownership
if they can sell the venue by April 2006
(that's when their lease runs out),
I'll keep you posted as I know more.
Farewell interview with Judy Hackett
Espress Garden remains open until at least April 2006

30 Mar 2006 - Espresso Garden is closing... owners Gene and Judy Hackett had a buyer who was interested in continuing the music, but the landlord opted to rent the building to a new sushi restaurant which will not have live music... I've been going here for years, since it was "Cafe T" with live music, but those days are over... the only real listening room for live music in the South Bay is closing.
Friday 07 April is TrueWind Music's Last Hurrah at the Espresso Garden... free show, no tickets, no reservations, just come on down, doors 7pm, music starts 7:30pm... performers include Dave Metzger & Dennis Aiello, Chuck McCabe, Jay Howlett, Steve Kritzer (in the round), Bev Barnett & Greg Newlon, Mike Simpson with Verne Schnaidt (and others may borrow him as well), Carol McComb and the Atkinson-Kincheloe Band (Lisa Atkinson, George Kincheloe and Marty Atkinson).
Saturday 08 April is Fiddling Crickets last show at Espresso Garden... doors 7pm, music starts 8pm, $15... performers are Brian Gore and Richard Gilewitz... Brian Gore is a Bay Area self-taught fingerstyle guitarist who has developed "one of the most unique new guitar styles on the scene today" (News and Reviews)... Richard Gilewitz is a virtuoso 6 and 12 string guitarist and composer, has 4 solo CD's to his credit, and known for his idiosyncratic style and zany outlook on life.
Sunday 09 April is the absolute last day of the Espresso Garden, time and format to be decided, call 831/475-4938 for info... this is a Fiddling Cricket party to thank all the local musicians who have supported the series by playing in it, running sound for others, and generally helping... it's also to thank Gene annd Judy Hackett for keeping the Espresso Garden going for 8 years and making it a center for acoustic music... Dale and Marilyn Barcellos will be our musical hosts and many other local musicans will be there performing and partying! Join them in this last hurrah!!

The best acoustic music room in the South Bay!
Some would say this is the only regular acoustic room in the South Bay, and while not exactly correct, many of the other rooms seem to take music as secondary to some other activity... this room focuses on the music first... a small café during the day (7am to 3pm, Mon to Fri), they are closed on weekends except for shows... it re-opens during the evening to become a music room that serves food, but only before the show starts, they don't serve food or noisy espresso during the show.

The most remarkable thing about this place is the trompe l'oeil mural along the south wall, it is an amazing work of art, you should spend some time really studying it, I am continually amazed by the artwork... most people don't even know this mural exists, it's just painted of the wall of a small café that almost everyone passing by ignores, consider yourself informed about a secret work of art.

Art Imitating Life Imitating Art Imitating Life - by John Pugh

|
|
At a café in San Jose, California, that features a Pugh mural, a customer complained he had received the "silent treatment" when he tried to introduce himself to a pretty woman reading a book... the woman was a painted illusion in John Pugh's mural.

Located on South Bascom Avenue, very near Interstates 880 and 280, easyily accessible via public transit (which I've used exclusively for years)... just a few blocks from Stevens Creek Boulevard (easy 15-20 minute walk) and across the street from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
|

The place is small, perhaps 80 people, maybe less, so sold out shows are common... there are also at least three different producers of shows, and advanced ticket procedures may be different for each producer, but generally advanced tickets (or reservations) are given up if you arrive less than 15 minutes before showtime, and your reservation is given to anyone still waiting... also, with at least one producers, those with advanced tickets are seated first, to give them preferred seats... that said, just about any seat at this venue is good, but obviously some are better than others.

All shows open at 7pm for buying food, music starts at 8pm, usually a short break after the first set, then a second set for about an hour... earliest the music is over is about 10-10:15pm, barely time for the last main bus of the night (see transit below), but most shows last until 10:30 or later.

The stage is small and takes up a small corner of the venue, perhaps 12" above the main floor, it also has a piano on it... I've seen mostly solo or duo acts, although I've seen groups of four musicians several times, even groups with a stand-up bass... I'd guess groups of six is probably the limit.

The venue is easily missed if you are not looking for it, a small stripmall with some other shops next to it, set back from the road to give a parking lot, there is more parking in the back... some shows enter at the front door, some enter the back door, be sure which one will be used in case there is a large line, you don't want to miss your spot in line... and yes, I've had a line of over 60 people in front of me (and more behind me) before the place opened, we were all there early, at 6pm, for Judy Henske... also been to a show that turned away over 120 people, that was Vienna Teng.

PUBLIC TRANSIT
Here is the new Transit.511.org website for all Bay Area transit.
Please confirm the schedules I give here are current.
You will be taking local VTA buses, if you are going further you will need to transfer to VTA 22
or Light Rail, these are not going to get you far at the late hour you will be taking them.
If you have very far to go, you may be able to get there by VTA 22 bus route,
else you will need to use a private car (or taxi), spend the night in a motel,
or spend the night on the street until about 5:30am the next morning,
only VTA 22 runs all night, the Light Rail only runs until 1am.
I live in NE San Jose, this is actually the closest of the 90+ venues I go to,
it takes about 1 to 1.2 hours to go to this venue, about 1.3 to 2 hours
to go home, a far cry from my usual 6+ hour round trip by transit.

CAUTION - If you are planning to transfer from the VTA 23 to VTA 22,
be aware that the bus transfer is usually at Santa Clara and First Street,
but on Fri/Sat nights, VTA 23 / 22 will transfer at San Fernando Street
(at First Street) this is to avoid several blocks of jammed traffic
from the "cruising" that has plagued San Jose for so many years,
you can walk downtown Santa Clara Street faster than you can drive it.
Check the VTA 22 map on the web, and check with your driver.

VTA Light Rail . . . . . . the primary North/South transit route through San Jose,
it used to run 24 hours, but now shuts down about 1am.
There is only one Light Rail line that affects this discussion,
the Alum Rock to Santa Theresa (via Baypointe) line,
check the Light Rail map to see where it goes.
All of the VTA bus routes mentioned above connect to the Light Rail,
but I don't know which Light Rail station you're trying to reach,
check the Light Rail schedule for the station you want.
