Role in Barrelhouse |
Jim's Role |
I sing, I play some neat percussion thingamabobbers, and I play a wicked air guitar! But I can tell my air guitar is starting to not sit very well with the rest of the band because my soloing is getting more attention at our shows than the real guitar solos that Dale and Bill are playing! They're starting to talk, so I think they're getting a bit miffed...tensions might be brewing... |
Favorite Barrelhouse Song |
That's easy....Roundabout is my favorite. It's 8 minutes of high energy heart-pumping fantasticalness. It's so great that I even invented a new word for it (go ahead....just try to find fantasticalness in your dictionary!). Without question, it's easily the best song I sing with Barrelhouse, and some might argue that it's the best song the band plays. Everything about the tune just mesmerizes me.......of course, if we played "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, that would be my favorite, but we don't play that tune yet so my fave is still Roundabout. |
Favorite Barrelhouse Show |
Favorite Barrelhouse Experience |
I'm still waiting to pull my streaker act during one of the band's instrumental tunes. I haven't told the band about it yet....I'm saving it as a surprise for some night down the road!! |
Best Band of All Time |
I use an SM 58 mic....and that's about it. Oh yeah, I almost forgot....I also got this neat little egg shaker thingy, which I shake like the dickens, and sometimes I whip out the tambourine or the "vibra-slap". To top it all off, I got me some bitchin' sunglasses, which undoubtedly bring some class to the band. |
Best Concert of All Time |
The Rolling Stones, obviously. They were the first classic rock band I got into, and I haven't looked back since. The reason why they're the best band of all time doesn't really need to be said: it's known by most and seldom questioned. We don't do any Stones right now, but maybe we'll change that (hint hint) with some stuff from "Sticky Fingers", hopefully. But I've got my work cut out for me 'cause Jim (our drummer) doesn't want to go there. He tried to turn me on to a prog band called Gentle Giant, but that devil music ran contrary to my church upbringing. We'll see, we'll see... |
Other Bands/Musicians of Interest |
Led Zeppelin, the Guess Who, the Who, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, the Doors, the Band, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughn....the list goes on and on. I know it's all stuff from the 60's and 70's, and I'd give just about anything to be able to turn the clock back so I too could take in those great early rock concerts like the rest of the band did when they weren't as old as they are now. As you can tell, I'm a pretty stubborn guy, and I know that I've found what I like in classic rock, so that's the timeframe I'm staying focused on. Why - that easy.....so far, no-one has come up with any better music! |
Other Interests and Hobbies |
I'm at Algonquin College studying Advertising (I hear there's good money in advertising...especially here in Ottawa!!). It's not exactly a hobby, but I devote tons of my time and energy to it. Other than that, I can't really say I have too many other interests and hobbies. I used to play a lot of video games, does that count? How about when my girlfriend gets me to wear my rubber fireman outfit, the one with the nifty rubber hose....now that's gotta count for something. Of course, there's owning all of the Final Fantasy games, but that might be classified more as an obsession than a hobby. Am I'm a total geek or what....I might be...maybe, well...except maybe for the rubber fireman outfit......my girlfriend really digs the rubber fireman outfit! |
Music Gear Used in Barrelhouse |
That's easy - that would be the drive to the Deep River gig back in November 2003. There was this crazy snowstorm and about half way there, the drive axle on my car started making funny noises. When will this pain end? |
Worst Barrelhouse Experience |
Inspiration to Sing |
I started my singing career in the church choir. I was just a young alterboy back then, but I loved belting out those church tunes Rod Stewart style 'cause it always got a rise outta the crowd. I got my big break when a visiting priest heard me singing in the shower and invited me to join his little group called The Soap On A Rope Gang. Eventually I grew discontented with the direction that was taking............so I went shopping and ended up joining Barrelhouse instead. It's a good thing I can sing a few tunes because, aside from those little percussion thingamabobbers and my air guitar, I pretty much stink at playing any other instruments. |
It's pretty hard to pick one 'cause I've only been with Barrelhouse for a little bit now. But I'll choose the Deep River gig we did back in November. It's not because of the crowd or anything, but because I learned more in that one night than I have since....and because I didn't have to do all those weird things that I had to do when I did that other Deep River gig with The Soap On A Rope Gang! |
The Rolling Stones in Montreal, January 2003. I won the tickets in a karoake contest and bussed out to Montreal for the day. Never before or since have I seen such a spectacle of lights, sounds and pure entertainment. The Stones are still gods. The only contender might be SARStock which took place that summer in Toronto, but I only mention that because of the amount of bands that were there. But the Stones can't be beat. Ok, so both of these events were last year....what do you want from me, I wasn't even born when the rest of the band members were taking in those great concerts during the 60s and 70s.....ya gotta cut me some slack!!! |
