Role in Barrelhouse |
Kelvin's Role |
I'm the keyboard player in Barrelhouse. I also sing lead vocals on a few tunes, and I sing harmony vocals on many other tunes. |
Favorite Barrelhouse Song |
I've really grown fond of playing some of the more progressive music we play in Barrelhouse. l like working with Dale and Bill, trading licks and solos, stuff like that. I like covering the Santana material, and I like playing Long Distance Runaround by Yes - that song is especially challenging for me because I play keyboards and I sing the lead vocal. But it's a great song, and when it works, it's a fun tune to play. |
Favorite Barrelhouse Show |
Favorite Barrelhouse Experience |
We had a great time after the Bear's Den gig out in Deep River because we were all there for the whole night and we just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. |
Best Band of All Time |
I never thought there was any one band that could be called the best. I like lots of variety in my personal listening, so I listen to many good bands. Lately, my tastes seemed to have shifted towards fusion jazz - I've been listenting to Return to Forever quite a bit lately. |
Best Concert of All Time |
For musicianship, the concert that stands out in my mind is the 1977 Weather Report concert that I saw at Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto. Another standout was Little Feat's gig at Vancouver's 86th Sreet Music Hall in 1987 -- that was great!! |
Other Bands/Musicians of Interest |
I like Yes, Little Feat, Return to Forever, Weather Report, and lots and lots of other bands. I can easily spend time listening to Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Vladimir Horowitz, and of course Stevie Wonder. |
Other Interests and Hobbies |
While I play in Barrelhouse, I also play with others around town. I guess my interests are always associated with music in one way or another. Other than music, I like to make money, spend money, then make more money and spend it. And I have to spend at least a few weeks every year baking on an oceanside beach somewhere way down south of here. |
Music Gear used in Barrelhouse |
Yes! My gear is USED - especially after the Gloucester Fair gig. But all kidding aside, I currently use a Yamaha S-80 piano and a Roland VK-7 organ. I like the touch action on both, and the combination of sounds I can get from each unit - all of which adds colour and texture to our performances. |
Worst Barrelhouse Experience |
The first time we played at the Gloucester Fair, I had lots of problems with my gear. We had to cut certain tunes that day to compensate for the problems. It's no fun when you have to deal with gear problems on stage. |
Inspiration to Play Keyboards |
This came fairly early when I was a kid. I remember that first piano lesson at school. I hated it enough to get up and leave before it ended (I always wanted to be a drummer). Later that day, I went over to the piano at home and meandered around until I discovered Middle "C" - I remember it sounded really good to me. Things just went on from there. |
I'd have to say my favorite show was the last O'Connor's gig - we had a great crowd on hand and everyone really seemed to be there for a good time. Lots of people were dancing, and everyone seemed to be into the music we were playing and into having a great time. It's always lots of fun when the crowd is into the show. |
