In Florida, Griffin and I visit Pat, the woman who fostered him nearly four years ago. Pat describes details of how Griffin was picked up as a stray, how he escaped from the animal shelter and how he traveled fifty miles before being picked up again. Pat explains how Griffin beat the odds when a compassionate animal control warden saved him from death row. Near Charleston, South Carolina, The Chief receives much attention as I enter the gated island community where a friend's parents live. My friend's father and I impress his neighbors by taking The Chief on a tour of the island, hoping to see some alligators that inhabit the area. I meet a friend at her family's farm in rural Virginia and then head to Williamsburg where I show Griffin around the restored colonial area and point out the building at William and Mary where I did graduate work. I meet up with a group of friends and we spend Thanksgiving in a rental home on the wind-swept North Carolina shore. Griffin and I watch with amazement and anticipation while our friends prepare a large holiday meal. From North Carolina, I return to the DC area. |
