Investigative reporters dream of having a Hollywood movie created by their stories. This dream came true for Mark Bowden who was a writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. However, he states this, "I prefer the written word to film. It is my spiritual home." He wrote the book, Black Hawk Down, which was his story of Magadishu battle in 1993 that killed 19 American soliers and killed over 1,000 Somalis. When he began his research, it was known as the Battle of the Black Sea, also called the Day of The Rangers in Somali. As his research progressed, he realized that there was not a defintive rebuilding the actions of that day. He also realized that there was only a handful of government investigations of this event. In his story, Black Hawk Down,he focused on the confusionof this battle and gives readers a visual of the story. It took Bowden six years to complete the book. This was after a 29-part series that he had written on the battle in the Inquirer two years previously. Bowden recounts how mwny people had not heard of this battle. In addition, the ones who did remember, recount the people who had died and them being dragged through the streets by the Somalia mob. Bowden reminds the readers and stated, " No matter how critical history records the policy that led up to this fight, nothing can diminish the professionalism and dedication of the Rangers and Special Forces who fought there." Mark Bowden is able to tell an awesome story about the battle in somalia and is able to express his important points. He is able to give the reader a visual through his words.
