The Bihari eGroup 'Project Initiatives' A Brief Background

There have been several proposals & discussions that this group should take initiatives to execute a project in Bihar. So much so that many of the members have become virtually fed up with the amount of discussions we have had. If you go through the previous messages you will certainly get the a feel that for everyone - 'Time is running out'. It is understood that discussions are important but under the given conditions no one wants to listen - There's an outcry for ACTION not words !

The Challenge:

This group exists as an e-group. It is neither registered nor members know each other. In such a scenario how do you undertake an initiative? Under the current group logistics an immediate 'Registration' is ruled out. It has to be a gradual effort so that the group develops a trust and members know each other well.

How do we develop the trust?

It does not develop overnight. First the group has to be prove to itself that it means business. Over a period of time members  have to develop understanding and fellowship , that in turn would translate into  maturity and longevity for the group.

A Pragmatic Approach

Over several weeks of  'Sunday Chats' and group messages, some of  the members decided that the best way to execute a project is to select a project that appears to be very simple to execute and one that has an open option for most of the members to participate.

How can one participate?

''Tan, Man, Dhan' - this is how one can contribute. The simplest of these is the 'Dhan'  contribution. This has been arrived at because of the fact that 90% of the members are working professionals. They have a busy schedule in a fierce professional environment - then the personal & professional commitments come into play. Let a person/ couple of persons be a coordinator for a project, s/he makes out the plans and requests everyone to participate. Those interested contribute their services, time and/or money voluntarily.

How does this benefit the group?

It brings  to the front the harsh realities - the capabilities & limitations of the group. Also everyone comes to learn what this group means. There's a bondage that develops between the members, first hand experience of executing a project with people whom you have never met in person ! In the process everyone matures and learns the nuances of the others - this avoids the knee-jerk reactions which is suicidal for any group.

More about the school - A report by Harsh Verma

The school was started privately on 1st April, 1922 and it was taken over by the state govt on 15 November 1958. Its capacity and strength is 68 and it is purely residential. It is managed by the Social Welfare Department of Bihar govt. The govt gives Rs 500 per month for each student for food, Rs 50 for soap and Rs 50 for medical usage. The govt provides food, shelter, medicine and clothes. This is until class X. After matriculation they go back to the custody of their guardians. Some may go to college if they are able but the state plays no role. By the way, the school has no fridge, TV or Radio so there is no question of computers.

The school authorities stated that they had no provisions for rehabilitation and wanted to have a workshop where the visually disabled could be trained in computers. Some persons said that they wanted provision for higher learning and others said that the less educated could be involved in making candles or weaving cloth.

The office  had both blind and people with sight. No one understood the concept of the internet. They were told that we were a social organisation called Bihari who were channelising funds through Rotary since the mention of the internet drew a complete blank. One thing they said was that almirahs are more essential than anything else. They have just obtained a huge amount of books with several more on the way and they desperately need more almirahs - 7 to 8 in number.
