Waxing philosophical, waning intellectual
When is Braintree live next?
- Who knows? I don't.

Lyrics...

  [ camera obscura ]

Here we go,
Off on this stale safari
Please pretend patience
Hide behind the brush strokes you adore
Feed the friendly failures you ignore
Painting yourself to be left-handed
Full opacity so you don't have to see
(Identity)

Here it comes,
In on this psalm tsunami
Singing who we are
Horror on the streets of Montreal
Saturday sadness for the Sunday fall
But you're missing the point of betrayal
You've got to lie to me instead of to yourself
(Your self-esteem)

CHORUS:
Love because you don't want to die alone
Hate because you can't say that you were wrong
Friend to the silence, foe to the trust
Fond of the feeling of a heart adorned in rust
But you don't seem to mind
No you don't seem to mind at all

So, elephants don't make for decent conversation with you?
So just stay calm and keep pretending.

CHORUS

The story...

"'Camera' is an amalgamation of two songs that I'd written, and has probably been the most difficult to piece together, musically, for this album. I wrote and rewrote and rewrote the intro a dozen times, trying to get that PERFECT progression into the all-out heaviness in the main riff, but it wasn't until I saw Story of the Year live for the second time when I really got it. The intro to 'And the Hero Will Drown' is absolutely the most exciting thing I've ever heard live, and I really wanted something as adrenalizing as that to open a Braintree show/album. Hopefully I've been able to get the same sense of anticipation.

All in all, though, this is probably the most melodically dramatic song I've written to date. It focuses on some weird chords that might be minor chords, minor 13th chords, major 9th chords, I don't know that much about music theory to know. They're just cool-sounding chords, and provided me with a million different directions to go in, melodically. Which is probably why it was so hard to write, come to think of it. It starts off like I'd want a live show or an album to start, and segues nicely into the lyrics, which I wanted to both have strict relevance to the subject matter of the song but would also be a nice lyrical gateway into the album as a whole. I like writing lyrics that work on multiple levels, it's a lot better 'Hey babe I love you, you're so pretty', or 'Ooooo oooo oooo my dad sucks, fuck him'. Or not, what do I know? I just like challenging myself."
