"'Concern' was originally known as 'Justin Will Now Die' back in the Mantra days because it's mostly flat-out fast and aggressive drumming, running double bass and the whole nine yards. It was based around the verse riff and grew out from that point, with the focal point being Justin's new double bass pedal. We only played it once, and as an instrumental, in his backyard, and that was pretty much just that. It's a shame we never really got to play more as a band after he got that double bass pedal, but yesterday's just a past time, as Ian Thornley once said. Wise man.
After Justin left the band I updated it vastly by speeding it up even more, adding an intro, main riff, and breakdown, and brought the song from being a nucleus to being an organism unto itself. It was my first effort ever at taking ballsy unmelodic and frantic riffing, and throwing melody on top of it, which would later prove to be some of the basis for Braintree, so I suppose you could call it the first Braintree experiment. It was clumsy in its original demo version, but it proved a point that things were changing, and since then it's become a bit more cohesive and aggressive. It's another fun song in the vein of 'Nickels and Dimes', which was written around the same time not-so-coincidentally. I've found that most of my songs come in pairs, which is something I should keep in mind when I come up with a new idea: there's probably a twin somewhere in the near future."
