Wednesday May 18th: Our hotel provided a complimentary breakfast so we ate that, and then spent the day shopping along 5th Avenue. My big purchase of the day was a WEST WING cup. Although I haven't watched the show for a couple of years, I did enjoy it. We also frequented places such as Macys. Being in NY, we couldn't pass up Broadway so we went to look for same day 1/2 price tickets. We settled on seeing "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Minskoff Theatre. "Tradition" "Tradition"... It was quite good. My two favourite lines were something to the effect of: "What is your brain without curiousity?" Answer: "A rusty tool". And the other... "God alone knows when we will see each other again." "Then we will leave it in His hands." We actually ended up sitting at the front to the right, and one of the leaves from the set flittered onto Suzanne. I continued to be unable to believe the vast numbers of people walking around everywhere, as well as how little road infrastructure there seemed to be despite the huge numbers of people. Lots of yellow cabs everywhere, indeed, but little else. (I would begin to get a better idea of how this worked when we journeyed via the subway on the 19th- but I'm getting ahead of myself.) |

Thursday May 19th: We caught the subway so that we could take the Staten Island Ferry and get a glimpse of the Harbour and of course, of Lady Liberty. The subway infrastructure was impressive. That's how so many can travel with so few cars... I had earlier been taken by the inscription: "Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free/ The wretched refuse of your teeming shore/ Send these, the homeless tempest-tossed to me/ I lift my lamp behind the golden door." Some of my anscestors had entered the Americas through NY. I can't help but wonder what they were thinking when they made their journeys. Were they full of hope and looking forward to a new country? What was life like that they were willing to step into the unknown and pursue life in a new land? Interesting, at any rate. I would like to visit Ellis Island someday. The Ferry was free- which was rather pleasant, and the sun and breeze were wonderful to experience. |
