• 1st Place: "PANU"
“This name is a composite word made from Panama, abundance of fish and butterflies and I think wildlife -- but I need to ask my Dad because he knows a lot about Panama... and Nunavut, which in Inuktitut means “Our Land”. PANU signifies the communion of people from the north: Canada, in the land of abundant fish and butterflies: Panama. I think this name is a good example for the Association of Canadians in Panama.” Michael Andrew Maloney, Ottawa, Canada, 9 years old. • 2nd Place: "Amigo" "Because that is the word for friend in Spanish which I learned this year at St. Clements School; and I think many Canadians go to Panama because they are lonely here and they need a friend, and Panama is very friendly to everyone here and there are many smiles around." Massimilaino Rovazzi, Toronto, Canada, 8 years old. • 3rd Place: "Compa Mounty". "I like this bear; he is beautiful and he is dressed like a Canadian police officer which is called Mounty, but he is in Panama and I want to call him Compa Mounty because he is our friend and protector in Panama like the police protects us." Rachel Arrocha, St Marys Academy, Albrook, Panama, 10 years old. Other entries: • "Sam": "Because it is my name, and my name is awesome, and Sam represents braveness, and Panama and Canada are brave." Samuel Velazquez. • "Rocky Mount": Because of the Rockies and Mounties. Cinthya de la Guardia. • "CanaPana Bear": Petra Kastanopolous. • "Ben”: "I want to name him Ben because it is one of the best names I have come up with." David Velazquez, 6 years old. • "Sergeant Keddy": "Sergeant Keddy is a Sergeant that protects and serves.” Alizee Orborn, 10 years old. |

Isn't PANU "un-bear-ably" sweet? And, lately, (s)he's been showing up at ALL our events. By way of background, (s)he was a prize from the Canadian Embassy at last year's Caravana. (S)he speaks English and French and is currently taking Spanish lessons. Like most Canadian residents in Panama, (s)he is retired, and his/her favorites are: Singing Group: 'Bear' Naked Ladies Hockey Team: Boston Bruins Baseball player: Yogi Beara (S)he loves soccer but stopped playing it professionally when (s)he couldn't get the grass stains out. Since coming to Panama, (s)he has developed a taste for arroz con pollo, patacones, and cerveza Balboa. Consequently, his/her jacket and pants no longer fit right, and most days (s)he can be seen working out in the Embassy gym or taking long jogs at Parque Omar. During Canada Day 2007, Canapan launched its “Name Our Mascot” contest asking young people to find a name for our furry friend. PANU got the most votes. But it was a difficult choice. Look at these other earnest entries: |
