 1578Battle of Alcazarquivir, or "Battle of the Three Kings" where Sebastian of Portugal, the King of Fez and the Moorish pretender to Fez were all slain.
 1790United States Coast Guard founded.
 1870Battle of Weissenburg. First battle of the Franco-Prussian War.
 1900Battle of Elands River. Though surrounded, 400 Australians held out against 2,500 Boers.
 1914Germans invade Belgium.
 1914Battle of Liége. First German attack of World War I.
