God is above all created things Whether it be mineral, vegetable, or animal kingdoms, men or angels, some likeness of God is in every creature, from the highest to the lowest. The highest angel, however, is but a weak reflection of the infinite perfection of God, who is the infinite Creator and Governor of the universe. Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord God, for creating this wonderful universe, fashioning us in your image and likeness and telling us to fill and subdue the earth. Our task is now to sanctify ourselves by serving you and our fellow human beings. We are helped in this by your grace and inspired by Christ’s example. Help us, Lord, to reach our goal. From whom do we learn to love God Jesus Christ, the son of God, teaches us through the Catholic Church to know, love and serve God. Jesus was God and man. He walked the earth and he was like us in every way except he did not sin. He selected twelve men whom he instructed. These were witnesses to all he said and did. They heard his parables, which are stories told to teach us a lesson. They saw him perform miracles, which included raising someone from the dead. He taught them about the law of love, which is to love our neighbor as ourselves, and before he died, he consecrated them Bishops and ordered them to spread the good news of the reign of God, to the ends of the earth. After Jesus died on the Cross, some people inspired by the Holy Spirit wrote down the important truths he taught. Today we call these writings the Gospels. We have a number of epistles and letters, which were written in the first century, which contain valuable instruction. The teachings of Jesus were also handed down to us through the spoken word. The followers of Jesus told the stories of his wonderful works, and each generation retold them to their children. Truths taught by Jesus Christ We find the chief truths taught by Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church in the Apostles Creed. A creed is a summary of the principle articles of faith. Since the Church received Christ’s mandate to teach his way of salvation to all people in all ages, it was necessary to formulate at least the most important doctrines. To preserve unity of faith, it was necessary to have the belief itself quite clearly stated. Thus there are records from the earliest times of a set profession of faith required of converts before their Baptism. As time went on, certain truths of the Creed had to be more clearly defined, not by the introduction of new doctrines but by an expression of the traditional belief in terms that left no room for error or misunderstanding. Some of these truths are expressed in the Nicene Creed. The twelve articles of faith called the “Apostles Creed” handed down from the Apostles contain the mystery of one God in three distinct Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the operations that are, for a particular reason, attributed to each person. The first part of the Creed tells of the first Person, God the Father, and the work of creation; the second part tells of the second Person, God the Son, and the work of redemption; the third part tells of the third Person, God the holy Spirit and the work of sanctification, begun on earth by and completed in heaven by glory. Some Truths are beyond comprehension The supernatural happiness of heaven and such mysteries as the Holy Trinity, the Incarnation, and the Redemption are beyond anything we can know by our unaided powers of reason. They can be learned only through God’s revelation. Jesus said, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world. (Matt. 28:18-20). |
