September 11, 2001, a day that will live in infamy
8:45 a.m.
American Airlines Flight 11, which had left Boston for Los Angeles
shortly before 8 a.m., hits the north tower of the World Trade Center in New
York City. There were 92 people aboard.
9:03 a.m.
United Airlines Flight 175, which had left Boston for Los Angeles at
8:14 a.m., slams into the south tower of the World Trade Center. There were 65
people aboard.
9:05 a.m.
President Bush is informed of attack as he visits schoolchildren in
Florida.
9:31 a.m.
Bush issues a statement saying United States will hunt down attackers of
World Trade Center.
9:40 a.m.
American Flight 77 from Dulles Airport near Washington, bound for Los
Angeles, crashes into the Pentagon. It carried 64 people.
9:48 a.m.
The Capitol and West Wing of the White House are evacuated.
9:49 a.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration bans aircraft takeoffs across the
country.
9:50 a.m.
South tower of the World Trade Center collapses.
9:58 a.m.
Emergency dispatcher in Pennsylvania receives a call from a passenger
on United Flight 93, which was heading to San Francisco from Newark. The
passenger says: "We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked!"
10 a.m.
United Flight 93 crashes about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It
carried 45 people. The crash site was 85 miles northwest of Camp David.
10:29 a.m.
The north tower of the World Trade Center collapses.
11 a.m.
New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani calls for evacuation of lower
Manhattan.
11:40 a.m.
Bush arrives at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., from Florida, delaying
his return to Washington.
1:20 p.m.
Bush boards Air Force One and flies to Offutt Air Force Base, home to
the U.S. Strategic Air Command, in Nebraska.
2:51 p.m.
Navy deploys missile destroyers and other equipment to New York and
Washington.
5:25 p.m.
Another building in the World Trade Center complex collapses.
7 p.m.
Bush arrives in Washington
8:30 p.m.
Bush addresses the nation, vows retaliation for 'evil acts.'
