Now you have your artifacts cataloged it is time to create a display. In order to keep each artifact identified without keeping a observable label that will distract from the display. In order to do this you should create a legend of every display. This is a typical way to create a legend. Lay out the display and identify the pattern you will have the artifacts in. After you have you have identified the pattern and display, lay all the artifacts out in the place where they will be attached. Now draw the display on a piece of paper. Mark each artifact with a line. As you start to attach the artifact write the site number from each artifact on the paper. Make sure that the number is placed in the same spot that the artifact is located. As you attach the artifacts all paper labels should be removed. On the stone artifacts, if the label is on the side that will be attached leave it there. If the label is on the side that is being shown then you should remove it from the artifacts.
When you are finished putting the display together, Redraw the legend into a notebook. On the same page place a picture of the finished display. Keep all the legends in the same notebook. I also like to attach a legend to the back of every display. This way I have a quick guide to where every artifact came from. |
