name: dilandau albatouseiyuu: the ever talented takayama minami of 81 produce. to read the interview with her about escaflowne, click here *in japanese only, sorry. i'll translate it when i get the time*
why do we like him, you ask?
reason #1: WHO HE IS
dilandau is a tough, beautiful young soldier who fears and stands down to no one *with the exception of dornkirk*. quick and intelligent, he is able to take full control of any opportunity given to him. as a commander of the ryuugekitai, he is very capable of instilling extreme loyalty into his small army through fear and threat of punishment and humiliation. he often pushes those under his command to the extreme, which, as we see, can have extremely successful or extremely tragic results. his teeming hatred for van sometimes causes him to lose sight of things and go through rampages of senseless destruction. this leads to him losing control and inevitably making mistakes. this may also be due to the fact that he is incredibly mentally unstable because of his history as a human lab rat. extremely traumatic events tend to revert his mind to a state of irrational fear, helplessness, and even causes him to change gender.
reason #2: HIS LOOKS
he definitely ranks amongst the most beautifully designed male characters of any anime. silken, wavy silvery hair, crystalline magenta eyes, powdery fair skin and lean, healthy youthful physique, this boy is incredible. the black leather with red accessories adds to the effect of his sexy antagonism. plus he's pretty tall *taller than all of the ryuugekitai. dallet comes pretty close, tho*, which we all know is a good thing. he also has some pretty awesome facial expressions. his emotions- anger, happiness, sneakiness, disgust- are all cleverly painted in the contortions of his face. he's one of the few characters in the series that displays such an awesome portrayal of expressions from all ranges of the emotional spectrum.
reason #3: HIS VOICE
raspy, pubescent, yet cold and angry, his voice is what makes his personality. he snarls, he screams, he hollers, he growls, and, best of all, he cackles. the cackling is the dilandau trait we all have come to know and love intensely. his only rival for the best anime villain laugh would probably be jinnai katsuhiko from el hazard. *but jinnai is not nearly as awesome as dilandau*
his voice is provided by the lovely and talented takayama minami, probably better known as the voice of tendou nabiki *ranma 1/2*, kiki *kiki's delivery service*, conan *detective conan*, and the vocalist for the band 'two-mix', who also does the music for gundam wing. she also does the voices of serena shezar *duh* and prince cid in escaflowne. i have to admit, however, that dilandau's voice reminds me a lot of my mother *who is japanese* when she would try to scare me when i was little with the 'obake' *ghosts and things that go bump in the night* that lived outside my window and would come for me if i was bad. i think it's a japanese thing.
reason #4: HIS 'TUDE
dilly seems to be one of the most cruel, disrespectful, and just plain impertinent characters in the series. however, his attitude towards various characters changes according to the amount of respect he holds for them. for instance, he treats his ryuugekitai as he would treat a crowd of young students. he has complete confidence that they will obey his every order, but gets very displeased when they make mistakes. okay, so sometimes he acts more like your abusive older brother and gives a few thwacks when things go wrong. it keeps 'em in line. with folken, dilandau shows a sort of forced respect. because folken is the chief stratego of the zaibach empire, he cannot help but be slightly subservient. as for emperor dornkirk, dilandau has absolute loyalty and respect for him. dornkirk is the only character dilandau ever bows down to. towards jajuka, dilandau shows a feeling of total trust and even friendship. dilandau has an inexplicable attachment to him, so he speaks in a normal tone of voice and is generally calm around him. he also gets very defensive when jajuka is put into a situation of harm, just as what jajuka would do for him.
hey, so what's he like in the escaflowne movie?
ahhh, yes. the escamovie. eventually i will have a section devoted to it, but not right now since i'm limited on escamovie resources. but anyway, here is dilandau in movie form.
seiyuu: minami takayama
even though dilandau is essentially the same character with basically the same role in the movie as in the television series, there are a few differences. in the movie, they briefly mention his upbringing, which is the total opposite of the cosmopolitan household he was born into in the series. the result of that is the fiesty dilandau that seems to be a lot more destructive and a lot wilder. in the movie, he tends to be a bit more reckless and has less regard for authority than in the series. unlike in the series, though, he gets punished severly for disobeying orders. his slayers have a little more personality in the movie, even thought they collectively get about five minutes of screentime, two minutes of it with dialog. they are much more loyal to dilandau than in the series, even to the point where they would kill in his name as opposed to the name of the black dragon clan.
i will add more to this when i am more awake to write something intelligible ^^
