The bridge of the USS HATHOR felt strangely empty and
silent to the Shillian Scientist who had been left
alone and in charge. The Chief Science Officer and
Executive Officer had not been certain if there had
been a hidden message in the fact that almost
immediately after having been told that she would be
in charge of the bridge, Captain Serenna had granted
every other officer on deck 'personal' time off.
Maybe the scientist would not have given it a second
though had the Commanding Officer not retreated to her
Ready Room once every other officer had left.
One of the more unique features onboard the USS HATHOR
had been a sort of 'automated piloting system' which
allowed it to have the computer handle the more basic
functions of the Flight Control Officer. This system
made sense for a ship such as this one due to the
limited number of officers onboard. Of course as
sophisticated as this automated pilot might have been,
it still required to be supervised, which had fallen
under the duties of the Chief Science Officer having
been the only one present.
Wanting to see the automated piloting system at work
up close the Shillian woman had moved from the central
chair to the Flight Control Station where the
scientist quickly noticed one major problem.
Computers, since their very birth, had been renowned
for doing exactly what they had been told, and as
sophisticated as the computer of the HATHOR might have
been, it had not been able to escape that most basic
of limitations.
In his haste, or maybe because the Hirogen had not
taken so kindly to having had Talia take his place
with such ease and skill, the Flight Control Officer
had entered their new course as heading for the S-3772
system. No one on the bridge had caught the error
until the Executive Officer sat at the Flight Control
Station and realised that the HATHOR had been sent on
a heading that would have taken it clear across the
Beta Quadrant. Without making a big deal of the error
made, the Shillian scientist had corrected their
heading and brought the ship back on course for their
next objective: S-7331 while making a mental note to
take a moment to check up on Ensign Uxtar to make sure
that he had been well enough to resume his duties as
pilot.
With the ship on course for their next training
ground, a T-Tauri star around which a great deal of
gravimetric activity has been recorded over the last
several years and which would prove to be very
challenging for the systems of the HATHOR, the Chief
Science Officer took a moment to review the crew
performance reports that had been thus far submitted.
After effecting the repairs of the power conduits,
Lieutenant Fairborn had taken a few minutes to fill
out the preliminary crew evaluations of those within
his department. Of course the name of Lieutenant
David Dawson, the Chief Engineering Officer of the USS
ANUBIS, had been first on the list and the Shillian
woman had been happy to see that the Oltharian had had
nothing but kind words for his *assistant*. As the
Executive Officer gave the matter a little more
thought though, she quickly realised that Elan might
not have been the best person for such an evaluation
since the giant had been well known for being as kind
as he had been large.
As the scientist continued to read the evaluations
written by the Chief Engineer though, the Shillian
quickly retracted her earlier thoughts realising that
the Oltharian had the highest working standards and
ethics she had ever seen. It was easy to see that
Lieutenant Fairborn had been a very demanding head of
staff, requiring perfection for everyone including
himself and that a positive report from him meant that
the person in question had performed well above the
normal expectations set by Starfleet.
Very satisfied by the splendid reports submitted by
the Chief Engineering Officer, the Shillian woman
moved on to the next department which had Lieutenant
Lea Summers at its head. Unlike the Oltharian, the
Chief Medical Officer had been less than thorough in
her evaluations of the few people under her immediate
command leaving the scientist with several unanswered
questions. Since the Executive Officer had known and
witnessed Ensign Mei at work, the Executive Officer
had not been concerned by the lack of information
submitted on her evaluation, but the same could not be
said in regards to the Assistant Chief Medical
Officer. Since this had been the first mission of
Ensign Elizabeth Halliwell, the Shillian scientist had
hope to use this preliminary report as a way to gage
how the new officer had been adapting to her new
position and crew.
Since there had been no real way for the Shillian to
get more information on the status of Ensign Halliwell
at the moment without actually seeking out the woman
and asking her a few questions, the Executive Officer
decided to move to other members of the crew. As the
scientist noticed the absence of any type of report or
evaluation on the greater remainder of the crew, the
Shillian woman suddenly realised that she had failed
to log in the very reports that she had been wanting
to read. As the head of the science department, the
report would have been extremely easy as she had been
the one and only member of that department onboard the
HATHOR, but as the Executive Officer it had been her
task to evaluate those whose position demanded of them
to be on the bridge.
With a lengthy sigh the Chief Science Officer headed
back to her station and prepared to tackle the task
that she had inadvertently omitted, noting to herself
as she did so that the duties of an Executive Officer
were rapidly proven to be much more demanding, and far
less exciting than those she normally enjoyed as head
of the science department. Although she had greatly
enjoyed her role as First Officer up to this point,
the scientist still found herself thinking to the day
when she would be back on the ANUBIS and all of its
laboratories where she would have the freedom to
perform all of her research and even enjoy some
educational or entertaining activities with Talia.
