The half Vulcan FCO finished inputting the flight data that would allow
a low visibility approach to the planet IRRAJ but his mind was really
elsewhere…
Even as he watched the red haired Captain he knew he should speak up. Yet his human side was afraid of what would happen. Since he had joined this crew he felt he had finally found a home. Looking over his shoulder he watched as his big Hirogen friend and the Marine CO discussed tactics and options at the tactical station. The big hunter he was sure was talking stealth and one on one hunting, while he could imagine the marine advocating for men and weapons. It did not matter to the FCO because he had already seen what this crew could do under pressure… It was himself he was afraid of.
Controlling the human emotions that constantly boiled within was never
easy, but he had begun to have better control and longer periods before they
boiled out. He had managed to hide the last couple of emotional
outbursts from everyone. Although he was not sure about Ensign Mei… she had
almost caught him when the last outburst had hit. Derek glanced back at the
young Cns… his feelings about her since their mind meld still unfocused.
That was the main thrust of his dilemma… his emotional control. He did not want to endanger the mission, yet he did not want to be left behind either. Turning back to his console he picked up the PADD he had prepared and turned to give it to the Captain. But all he saw was her back as the turbolift doors closed. With so little time left before departure he had to make a move.
"Excuse me Captai…" the FCO started to say having spent most of his
time aboard the HATHOR with the hybrid in command.
Serenna worried about her friend ignored the title and answered. "Yes
Ensign what is it?"
"Could I speak to you in private for a moment M'am?"
The Romulan/Terran eyed Stormwind for a moment and than nodded her
head. Leading the way they entered the Captain's Ready Room. As the doors
hissed shut she turned and regarded the FCO. "We launch in a few minutes,
could this have waited?"
"I do not believe so." Spoke the Vulcan and he continued, " I have
studied the mission brief and have an idea. As you know I sometimes have
trouble controlling my human side, I feel that based on the IRRAJ class style
culture this could be detrimental to the overall mission. Should I lose
even momentary control with the upper class it could embarrass not only the
ship but also the Federation."
Serenna could see the logic behind this but could not see where the
Ensign could be going with it. "Go on."
Derek took a deep breath… " I think we are overlooking a major
information source. IRRAJ has an economic base that relies heavily on independent traders and scouts. Their major spaceport is run mainly by the lower class. If there has been infiltration they would know perhaps even more than the royals would."
"I see what you mean, so what are we discussing Mr. Stormwind?" Her
eyes bored into his as she ran a hand through her blond hair.
The Vulcan knew it was now or never, and as his pal Uxtar would say
::You cannot catch your prey, without planning all aspects of the hunt…even
failure.::
Handing the PADD to his XO Derek went on… "The DRAGONSEYE is an unknown
vessel for the most part. With about an hours work it could be turned
into the vision of a free trader. With a load of religious objects for both
religions I could fly in advance of the ANUBIS and work the lower
class, as a half breed Vulcan trader. I could even have another member of the
crew as a passenger or as my life partner. I/we would have the freedom to move
among the lower class that the ships crew would not."
Serenna gazed at the FCO she could see that he believed in this plan.
But it was not a decision that she could make. "Mr Stormwind I'm sure the
Captain will appreciate this as an option and I will bring it to her attention. But for now I suggest you return to your station and prepare for getting underway."
Derek knew he could not ask for more than what he had got. Standing to
attention he nodded… "yes M'am" .. spun on his heels and returned to
the bridge.
If he had glanced back he would have seen the slight smile on Serenna's
face as she shook her head in wonder at the Ensign's back.
