What a world Dohäi and his brother had been thrown into! Each day lead to a new discovery, a new friend. Dohäi had never met anyone else his own age, even Helleri had been a few years older. Now there were other boys for him to play with. Play itself was even a new thing. On Svalbard there had never been time for play, it was always patrolling, eating or sleeping. Helleri had been so eager to show her parents she was worthy and ready for her armor she spent all her energy keeping eyes wide and senses open. Here they could wander around the Aerd for hours on end, never too far away though. They had been warned against it for their protection from the wylds lurking.

Alena had always given a high-pitched cry when she thought they were too far from safety, from Drämoro. Drämoro skulked and sloped around the Aerd much as he had back home, only here he had no guard duty to occupy himself with. Dohäi had tried to get him to explore with him, to play a game the other boys had taught him. Drä humored him at first, playing in a half-hearted way until Dohäi knew he was bored and said he could go. As time past, his older brother became more surly, always scowling and stalking about.

"It's only anxiety about the hatching." he told Alena as they kicked around the landing area, all the other boys inside for chores. She chirped softly and rubbed her head against his cheek, flexing her wings. Suddenly the flit seemed to snap to attention, tilting her head to catch some windblown sound. Then she began to vibrate, something that startled Dohäi at first but then he realized she was humming! He pelted for the entrance, saw that Drä wasn't on the sands yet and waited for him. At last he showed, loping in bear form so fast he would have bowled Dohäi over had he not stepped out of the way just in time.

"Drä! Come on it's time!" Dohäi called to his brother who switched to human form and took his offered hand. They walked onto the sands together, Dohäi clinging to his brother's hand more than he noticed. A rainbow of dragonets passed before them, some bonding, others not. When they were the only candidates left on the sands, Dohäi began to worry. "What if the portal was wrong..." The thought had barely time to cross his mind when two dragonets approached. A brown dragon with black wings was watching Dohäi keenly, and indeed stood before him, glancing back to his black brother, who stood beside Drämoro. "I am Dotwi'Suah and I choose you." he said, looking proudly up at Dohäi. They led the two hungry dragonets off the sands, both caught up in the wonder of both of them.

Later, when Dohäi knew his brother was asleep, he asked Dotwi, "What made you pick me, and your brother my brother." The brown-black gazed up at Dohäi, blue eyes glowing softly in the dark room. The same reason the portal saw fit to spit you out at the Aerd. Fate. The dragonet crooned. "Fate..." Dohäi repeated in a whisper before wrapping an arm around his dragon and falling to sleep, feeling complete for the first time since his parents died.
