Another enigmatic character, Yamazaki Susumu is held in high regard by the high-ranking members of the Shinsengumi, especially Hijikata. He is a shinobi, and gathers information both by night and by day. At night, he leaps from roof to roof silently in conventional shinobi style, but in the day, he dons kimonos and powders his face, transforming himself into a beautiful lady so as to collect information for the Shinsengumi. (Scroll down for a picture of what he looks like as a girl) He has a cold, indifferent attitude to those around him, particularly his peers and people he considers weak (such as Tetsu). When speaking to Hijikata, however, he is extremely respectful. It is clear that he has Hijikata's complete trust. He and Tetsu got off on the wrong foot - with Tetsu thinking that Yamazaki was a thief and Yamazaki mistaking Tetsu for a spy. Tetsu was injured, though not severely. Yamazaki rarely loses his temper, but he does so when Tetsu gets in the way of his work, going as far as to slap him. Although he did have a good reason for slapping the annoying little redhead *grinz* Yamazaki is very serious about his work, and is willing to lay down his life for the Shinsengumi. You may have noticed that Susumu and Ayumu share the same surname. Well, they are related! Ayumu is Susumu's older sister, and in the series, it is clear that Ayumu and Susumu are not on the best of terms. As a matter of fact, they were not seen talking until the 8th episode, and even then, conversation between them was minimal.
