It all started back in 1997 when Keara was born into a family with a tremedous love for cars, classics, street rods and of course Drag Cars. She started to show her love for cars at a very early age, always playing with Hot Wheels cars and making car noises. As she grew she always wanted to be in the garage helping her Daddy work on the cars, she really enjoyed getting all dirty doing an oil change. She carried on with a very normal childhood of course playing with games, dolls and all the typical girl toys along with her cars. She continued helping Daddy out in the garage tinkering with the cars.
When Keara turned 6 her love grew even more as she became more capable of working with tools. Her father Tim had a 1978 Monte Carlo which him and Keara began to dig into to start the conversion into his first drag car. Well funding fell short and the project was put on hold.
Then in 2004 when Keara turned 7 she seen the movie that got alot of kids interested in a whole new sport, Disney's "Right On Track". Until we all seen this movie, we never really knew anything about the Jr. Drag Racing League. It proved to her that you shouldn't be ashamed to be a girl that loves cars, you should be proud. It was a movie that the whole family really enjoyed. After seeing the movie a few times Keara came to us and asked us if she could start Jr. Drag Racing. We were both just waiting for the question to come judging by the look in her eye when she watched the movie. Well we didn't know what to say except, "we will think about it". We wanted to take some time and check into the sport in depth on the safety issues, costs, etc. During our decision/research time we continued to remind Keara that if she started racing it would interfere with other activities she may want to do like Girl Scouts, Soccer, Cheerleading & Karate. She replied "well then forget those things, I want to race". We took another 3 or 4 months to think about it figuring if it was just a phase it would pass, it was a big investment for a phase.
Finally when we realized she had indeed made up her mind, we decided to start looking for a car. Her father who was also a DJ on the weekends had 2 full sets of equipment and was only using one set at the time. As we said before funding fell short, so her father made a deal with her. If she is really serious about the sport and gives it her all, she must race for at least 2 years if we were going to make that investment, and she would have to step it up taking on more chores around the house. She agreed and followed through. We told her we would sell one set of equipment to get the money for a car for her. After about 6 months of searching we finally found just the type of car we were looking for and scrambled to get the equipment sold before it was too late. The car was in Wisconsin and we were in Michigan. It was a 2001 QT Junior Dragster with a Tecumseh Alcohol Engine a Chromoly Chasis and a Mono-Shock suspension. It was a perfect car she could progress in through the years. We got all the finances taken care of and started to plan the trip to Wisconsin. Keara was so excited all she talked about was the trip her and her daddy were going to take to pick up her car. |
