PURE Episode 4

News of Yuka and Toru hit the news-stands the next day, reporting what they'd overheard Yuka say to Toru about how he had "broken wings" and speculating on developments. Komiya and Ooya are over at Sekawa's office, and planning their next move. Ooya doesn't seem so convinced about the whole "Yuka project" until Sekawa tells him that not only is the Yuka project important to their publishing house, but also to his own future (hinting that if everything goes smoothly, he'll get a promotion.) Yuka's mom and Ryo have both read the article and are wondering whether the "unnamed reporter" with broken wings mentioned in the paper is referring to Toru... Ooya talks to Toru of the company's plan to "promote" Yuka ("use her, you mean" replies Toru), and Toru comments that changing the wording in his article had been part of this master plan. Ooya tells Toru that the two of them are going over to Yuka's house to apologize. Meanwhile, Yuka wants to see Toru and wanders back to where they were the night before, and meets a young boy who keeps a puppy in the yard of the murderer's mother's house. He's quite rude to her at first and tells her to go away, but when she reaches in her pocket to look for a candy to give him, saying "candy..." - he turns to her, asking "how do you know the dog's name is Candy"... and his interest is peaked. Toru and Ooya go over and apologize to Takako, and tells her that they want to come out with a photo-book of Yuka's work as compensation. Takako is inclined to refuse them, after Takako makes a comment that Toru doesn't seem to care one way or the other...(he's been mostly silent throughout the whole visit while Ooya grovels) his reply that "there's not much he can say... but he really likes Yuka's work" - seems to make her change her mind and she decides to reconsider their offer. When Takako tells Ryo of The Move's offer, he is naturally very much against the whole thing, saying he doesn't trust them, but Takako says contemplatively that Toru doesn't seem like such a bad person. She's also surprised to see Ryo's change of stance, as he's usually the one who's encouraging her to get Yuka out more. Yuka comes in and asks about Toru, but Takako doesn't want to tell her and says it's too complicated for her to understand. Yuka goes to look for Toru in the woman's yard again but while she's down in the yard, he's up on the second floor (in front of the woman's front door) so she doesn't see him looking down at her. She sees this row of bicycles with one fallen over, but when she tries be helpful and set it right again, she ends up upsetting the whole row of bikes (which fall down like dominoes!) Her expression is really funny, and Toru, seeing her, can't help breaking into a smile. She goes to play with the puppy, talking about his tiny wings, and Toru (watching her secretly from behind) thinks back on what she'd said that night. His pager goes off and he quickly scoots away before she can discover him. Toru is meeting with one of his ex-co workers from the news agency called Kuroiwa, who asks for his help in investigating a conspiracy he'd stumbled on. Because no one else has got wind of it yet, he doesn't want to use his own guys because it would alert the competition. It involves some under-the-table deals between a construction company and the government over some public tender job, and it's the the guy's secretary who is going to be made to take the blame if the bribery comes to light. He says it'll be a good opportunity for Toru to use this scoop to return to the news bureau. Just before he leaves, he mentions Asako's name (so he knows her!) and asks him to keep an eye out for her... Yuka's almost finished her new project (the one she's going to show Toru) and says that she can use the mahoo no beru to call him soon. Ryo comes into her workshop to give her this pretty marble, but she quickly hides her new creation from him. He goes to put it in her collection box and sees the zoo ticket but she won't tell him who she'd gone with, saying that it is a secret and that "she too has things that she keeps from him"... The next day, Yuka asks her mom if she can have a dog, but her mom says no, as dogs are too small and will easily go to heaven, and it's enough to just have her father there. After her mom leaves for work, Yuka unveils her new work, and it's a dog-house for the puppy! Takako goes to Yuka's doctor to update him on Yuka's latest developments, and he tells her that the changes he'd expected her to undergo seem to be coming faster than anticipated. He suggests that Takako tell Yuka about the Move's offer, and also to tell her the truth of "death". At home, Yuka's is looking for their name-chop for the delivery guy and she finds Toru's card, but can't read it except for "The Move" (she's only learned the Japanese alphabet, but cannot read kanji) and asks the delivery guy who tells her it's a namecard ("meishi) of Sawatari Toru. The phone rings, and the call's from Komiya who mentions Toru's visit yesterday and asking them to reconsider their offer... Yuka brings the doghouse to the puppy, and while she's there, the little boy comes by and she shows him the new home, and says her mom won't let her keep the puppy, and he says his father won't let him either, and complains about how grown-ups decide everything for you and don't seem to understand that kids sometimes have thoughts of their own. Yuka asks the boy if she can bring Toru to see the puppy. He doesn't seem too enthusiastic about including "an adult", which he guesses Toru to be from his namecard that Yuka's holding, but he agrees. She then goes off to find Machiko to take her to Toru's workplace, and they sit in a café across from his workplace waiting for him to show up. When he finally does, he's with Asako and they're returning from some assignment. She asks him about the Move's offer and he tells her about their proposal to be a photo-book, and to do a pre-book launch party. When she asks him if it's a good thing for her to do, he tells her that it's something she'll have to decide for herself ("if she's always depending on others, she'll never be able to take flight"). At the Move, Asako says that Yuka seems very dependent on Toru but all her comment to Toru about concentrating on the opportunity that can help him return to the news bureau instead gets for her is a sarcastic remark from Toru that Kuroiwa-san seems very concerned about her...
Ryo and Machiko are discussing Yuka, and he's saying to her how Yuka's been behaving strangely recently. Machiko wants to know what sort of things Yuka does and doesn't understand, and Ryo says she understands things she has experienced, but when she asks "how about a love relationship", he gives her an emphatic no! It's late that night and Takako is worried because Yuka's still not home. She looks for Toru's namecard and finds it missing, so she gets more worried and calls The Move but he's not there anymore. She leaves an urgent message asking Toru to call her if he knows of Yuka's whereabouts and the colleague pages Toru, but he's on his own in the streets and it's raining quite hard. Toru goes looking for Yuka and finds her hunched over the puppy's box in the yard. She's got her arms over the doghouse, which - in her hurry to finish and show Toru - she had forgotten to make a cover for. She takes her coat off to cover over the box, saying she'll have to remake his home because the rain had damaged it. Toru takes off his own coat and puts it over her shoulders. She's surprised to see him show up, and he tells her it's because his mahoo no beru went off... - End of Episode Four - |
