Hello everyone, welcome to my little resource for those interested in Walt Disney Imagineering. This is not related nor run by the Disney Company, so please DO NOT send me your resume or ask me what it is like being an Imagineer. Believe me, if i was employed by Walt Disney Imagineering, this page would not be on the web. But for those of you that don't have any idea of what Imagineering is, hopefully this page will help you out.
Basically, Walt Disney
Imagineering is the department of the Walt Disney Company that is responsible
for designing and creating everything you see in their theme parks.
They are also responsible for other themed Disney venues, like restaurants,
hotels and stores. Thousands of people with all types of various professional
backgrounds come together to make all the magic happen. WDI employs
librarians, technicians, architects, graphic artists, engineers, decorators,
computer programers, and about every other type
of occupation you can think of. This creative army consist of some
of the most innovative persons around. Only in Imagineering can things
like Indiana Jones: Temple of the Forbidden Eye, and Test Track! become
reality. The Imagineers are also responsible for a number of patents
in the Themed Environment industry. If you want a very small run
down of the types of jobs they offer, go to my
WDI Info Page, which you can access by clicking
on the parking sign below.
Personally I would like
to either work with ride attraction engineering, R&D (research and
development), or Illusioneering. I am planning to major in Mechanical
Engineering, though it should be about another 3 or so years until I graduate.
It would also be a major dream come true if I could become a designer.
My last trip to Disneyland this past summer I think was the deciding factor
my wanting to become
an Imagineer. I want to be a part of making the type of magic that
is 3-Dimensional, that can transport you to other worlds, that can make
someone young or old forget about reality for a moment, and most important,
give you memories that make you smile everytime you think about them.
Also, I never want to grow up, and if I have to work for a living, I think
this would be the perfect type of job!
WDI has its main office in Glendale, California, but they have small offices at the actual locations of thier parks. I also think they have a pretty big division at Orlando. I personally want to work at the Glendale division, being that I have relatives on the West Coast, and is only a 5 hour flight away from home here in Hawaii. Florida would be fun though! I also hear that working for WDI sometimes involves a lot of travel, and sometimes you might have to go on location to work on a problem. This could be any of the theme parks, such as Tokyo Disneyland or Disneyland Paris.
It is kind of hard to find
information on WDI, but here are a couple of links and things that you
might find helpful in finding out more information on Imagineering.
My WDI Info page has some facts about Walt Disney Imagineering, like some
history and jobs involved in the creation process. My WDI links have
some other fun links that you can explore. If you want to try and
contact Disney yourself, here are a few adresses and things to help you
out. There are a few Imagineering websites that are out there that
are far better and fancier than this one, so look around on the web.
Hopefully I will have some better information to put on here once I get
working in the industry. I supposedly might be able to work with
a company that manufactures ride control systems this summer, so that would
be my big break as far as working in this industry. Ha, if
you want to know what a WDI rejection letter looks like, I have a small
collection at home!

be able to answer, you can contact me. |
I have contacted a Imagineer that I sort of know, and according to him, unless you have inside contacts, it is pretty hard to get into the departments you want. He said that pretty much goes for the entire Imagineering community. I also hear that they are pretty picky with who they hire, but it never hurts to keep trying if you get rejected the first time. One thing about working for such a big company though is that there are too many cooksin the kitchen, or so I've heard from the inside.
Being that I am now a resident of Orlando, and also fortunate enough to be working in Walt Disney World, it is much easier to get in contact with the right people. Almost every manager or supervisor knows a person who is in WDI. I have even bumped into some just waiting in line to get into Epcot! I have remained persistant, and I believe one day that persistance will pay off.
Another helpful thing that you can use to see what it is like to Imagineer, is the Hyperion book by the Imagineers themselves. It is called "Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dreams Look at Making the Magic Real". It costs about 50 or so dollars at Borders. It is well worth the money to any Imagineer hopeful.
For those of you in Hawaii, there is usually Imagineer recruiting available for those interested. It is usually under the name of Imagi-Nations, and is some sort of contest or something. Unfortunately, it is only available for Manoa students, so those of you at community colleges are uneligible unless you transfer. Many walks of majors usually participate, including architects, graphical artists, as well as all types of engineering. Or if you just want to get your feet wet with the company first, I would highly recommend the Walt Disney World College Program.
If you want to know some trivial things about Disneyland, and some of the tricks that Imagineers use in the attractions, then you might want to check out my Theme Park Page. Here you will also find some interesting information on a few of Southern California's most famous themed parks.
I have added to my web-site arsenal a page dedicated to the Disney Theme Park. I think that they are the most unique theme parks that will ever exist. Here is my little tribute to them. Eric's Disney Theme Park Page, which you can get to by clicking on the image of the banner below.
Just Chillin' with my Imagineering coffee mug!!
Don't ask me how I got it, it's a long story.
