Minature Schnauzer Breed Info. | |||||||||||||||||

Since The Day I Was Born, I have had the pleasure of sharing my life with the Miniature Schnauzer. My families' first MS, Heidi, was a protector, playmate, and loyal friend to every member of our family. I can remeber when my Grandfather sat in his recliner & smoked his pipe, Heidi would sieze the oppurtunity and nuzzle her head under his hand to be pet. Textbook Traits of Miniature Schnauzers seem consistantly evident in every one I've ever met. They are loyal, playful, territorial, protective, alert, active, persistant (or stubborn ;) and highly intelligent (unless blonde; jk Ashley!). What I find even more interesting and heart-warming as I meet more Schnauzer owners is that the members of this breed not only share common traits but behaviors, attitudes and even sleeping positions! My Only Complaint After 29 Years is their size - I want a bigger dog. And guess what? The Schnauzer comes in small, medium and large! We are just learning more about the Standard and Giant Schnauzers and hope to add them to our family in the future. We like to hang out at Schnauzerware.org for lots of schnauzery info, pictures, art work, collectibles, news, and links about all three breeds. Miniature Schnauzers are the Perfect Dogs, if you like dogs that want to be near you all the time, protect you, play hard and long, keep you informed of intruders (or any person or animal within his line of sight!). They are easily trainable when positive reinforcement is used but can easily become shy or aggressive when their owners abuse their trust. They are sensitive to their human companions' moods and will often look like they 'feel your pain and your joy' right along with you. If you're wondering if they are the perfect breed for you (or just for fun) try Purina's Breed Selector @ Purina.com. Originally Bred to Be Ratters, Schnauzers that have not lost that ratter instinct often play a somewhat dramatic game of Shake-and-Kill. This game is identified by the furious shaking of a toy in the dog's mouth, usually combined with an "I'm bigger than I look" growl and a short, routine "after-grunt" once the animal(toy) is dead. In our house, the game doesn't end until someone recognizes Pixie for what a good dog she is to protect our home! The praise is usually prompted with Pixie raising her eyebrows as if to say, "Look ma! I saved you from this ferocious credent!". |
