In a hard fought game Sunday afternoon, the upstart youngsters of the Fuller Bowl upset the veterans of the HSFL. The Fuller Bowl came out early with something to prove, that they were being underestimated, and they did just that. Lead by Bryan Fuller, Shane Kitchen, and Kyle Yates, they were able to match the HSFL touchdown for touchdown and turnover for turnover in the first half. The HSFL looked respectable as well in the first half, and took a 6-5 lead into the break. The second half did not prove to be the same story for the HSFL. The Fuller Bowl played good defense, and the HSFL was not quite able to get anything consistent going in the second half. Everyone for the HSFL played relatively well, but they just couldn't seem to get into the flow of the game. At one point, the HSFL kick return team let a free ball roll into the end zone which was recovered by Kyle Yates for the score. The HSFL simply did not show up to play, and the Fuller Bowl took advantage and picked up the win 13-11. Several of the youngsters of the Fuller Bowl showed signs of tremendous talent in their win. Captain Bryan Fuller proved to be the most athletically dominant player on the field, finishing with four touchdowns, one passing touchdown, and two interceptions. Kyle Yates showed his potential to be a big time player, scoring four touchdowns, and throwing for five more, in addition to playing great defense. Shane Kitchen's contributions were not as obvious on paper, scoring only two touchdowns, and throwing for one, but he caught several short passes in key situations, and played good defense as well. Freshman Josh Fuller added two touchdowns also. Justin Evans was a relative non-factor in the game. The HSFL knew coming into this game that they had nothing to gain by playing. If they win, big deal, if they lose, they got beat on their turf by a group of rookies. Seeking a new challenge, the HSFL accepted the game, failing to respect the youngsters all week, and it showed. Not one player for the HSFL played the best game they were capable of, and it was obvious by the outcome. An eight passing touchdown game would be considered a great day by most players, but not co-captain Bob Glover. "I didn't play as well as I could have, and it showed. I just couldn't get any consistancy with the offense, either I was throwing a bad ball, or my the receivers were dropping them. I know we're capable of playing better than that, but we just didn't get the job done today. We lost to a team whose primary quarterback couldn't throw the ball twenty yards down field, that is just unacceptable. And don't even get me started on the officiating, that was god awful." said Glover following the game. Co-captain Mike Arana added five touchdowns, and played decent defense for the HSFL. Jeff Renn scored three touchdowns, and provided great pressure on the Fuller Bowl quarterbacks. Josh Neace, who due to injuries has been a mere shadow of his former self for the better part of this year, played sparingly, but played very well when he did get in, scoring two touchdowns, throwing for one, and adding an interception. Tom Phelps, who has had the best season of his career, failed to score in the game, and dropped a few passes as well. Brad Harber played well on defense, but was used sparingly on offense. Kyle Gonzales played two series at quarterback and looked good, throwing for a touchdown, and adding an interception on defense, but looked like he had stone hands receiving. One of the few HSFL bright spots was John Allendorf, who scored only one touchdown, but caught several big balls, and managed to contain Fuller for part of the game. The officiating throughout the game was very questionable, and Commissioner Glover is expected to have a meeting with Senior Official Phil Mulroe regarding that situation. Talks regarding a rematch during Thanksgiving week have been mentioned, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. |
