Manifesting God to Youth Offenders
Epiphany is an ecumenical Christian ministry for young men and women who are in custody of the North Carolina Department of Corrections. It is based on weekend models such as Kairos Prison Ministry, Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus, Chrysalis, Happening and Cross.
Its purpose is to manifest God's love to incarcerated youths, known as "Stars," through a three-day short course in Christianity and an ongoing follow-up program. Each Epiphany weekend involves a team of adults and youth from the Christian community who work together to show the love of God to those attending. In addition, it pairs each Star with a mentor who offers a positive one-on-one relationship, which many of these young people have never had.
God's love has been revealed throughout history, especially in the life and atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In church history, Epiphany is traditionally celebrated on January 6th, marking the arrival of the Magi in search of the Christ child. "Epiphany" is a Greek word meaning "appearance." The coming of the Magi marks the time when God is manifested on earth to the entire world through Jesus Christ.
The word "Epiphany" is frequently associated with a new beginning or a sudden and dramatic change of direction. Epiphany Ministry believes that even though the inmates have made bad decisions they are still children of God. As members of the Christian community and church, we are called to share the Good News of a loving God with all of God's children without regard for race, gender, age, or the crime which they may have committed. As we speak of God's forgiveness, we still teach that each individual is responsible for choices he/she has made. However, we believe that these Stars can live a better life now and later with the love of God in their lives.
