I have 1 hen left (July 4th, 2006). Just enough for eggs but not enought to make our homeowners association upset. Will get more when we move back to Michigan... someday.

Chickens are very friendly .. at least the hens are. When they are free range they will scratch around and find bugs to eat (and they love dandelions too!). They enjoy most table scraps including leftover Mac n' Cheese, meat (hot dogs, bologna, chicken), raw and cooked vegetables, and stale bread. They're eggs are so much better when they get to freerange.. Of course you'll want to offer them chicken layer feed too... but that is very inexpensive and they don't eat much ... especially when they have the choice of leftovers too. I raise mealworms to substitute for the bugs that they can't get in Wyoming.

"Hatching eggs are better then ordering chicks!" We ordered ours as chicks... but they were lost in the mail another day and over half the chicks in the box died. We were refunded the money... but it was sad to lose so many.

We hatched these guys from eggs we bought on Ebay. Just type "Hatching Eggs" in the Ebay search... you'll probably be shocked at how many different types of hatching eggs you can get. I've seen Macaws, every type of chicken, several breeds of pheasants, ducks, emus, turkeys, geese. If it's got an egg you'll probably find it there. They migrated Winter 2004 and stopped back in Spring 2005 but didn't stay long.
