"You might be interested to hear that a radio station here in New York, WFUV has played
Town I Loved So Well with Shane and Lancaster County Prison. They have a Sunday program of Irish music called Ceol na Gael. When I requested it again last week, they told me they wouldn't play it because they had a lot of complaints about it. The girl on the phone couldn't tell me what was so objectionable.  I think maybe some old-timers don't like Shane, or don't like the rocked-up arrangement.  Gerald Donnelly who duets with Shane on it is a good friend of mine, and I'm kinda pissed for his sake,  as  well as Shane's. Incidentally I've listened to the show for years and the only Pogues song I remember hearing was Sunny Side of the Street."

If He Should Fall
Jim Marr caught Irish folk-rock-punk legend Shane MacGowan at Sydney’s Metro Theatre. He was surprised but not disappointed.
***********
"For more than a quarter century Shane MacGowan has been the skinny, gap-toothed, iconic face of Irish punk, casting an extended middle finger at the world and its conventions. But this world is wont to find a way of slapping down its rebels and physically, at least, it has given MacGowan a bigger touch up than most.
Those of us long intoxicated by his lean, irreverence were taken aback as a bloated, middle-aged man hobbled into our midst with the aid of a walking stick. Slowly, and apparently painfully, he edged himself onto a high stool in the middle of the stage where the tools of his trade - the microphone, the schooner and the packet of fags - awaited...                                           SPECIAL   REPORT

Shane at the Irish Rover, New York
by Kevin Rooney
( for ROCKIN BOPPIN LUNATIC )
On the 12th of July, 2003 I had the honor of performing at the Irish Rover Pub in Astoria, Queens, New York. I was the opening act. My guitar, harmonicas and I. I arrived at the Rover around 8:30. Barry O'Reilly, the owner, welcomed me and rushed me to the stage. I asked if Shane was there. Barry, a good friend of his, said he was in a BarberShop down the street. "He heard you were coming" joked Barry. The packed house was getting restless. I plugged in and starting playing "Slievenamon". The crowd was very receptive. I played stuff like "Star of the County Down", "Spancil Hill", "Black Velvet Band". I also mixed it up with a Beatles song, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", Hank Williams' "I Can't Help it if I'm Still in Love With You", Waylon Jennings' "Good Hearted Woman", the Georgia Sattelites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", Bob Dylan's "Love Minus Zero" with harmonica, and the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday". Somewhere in the middle of my set, I said I was going to play a song about my hometown. "Where's that?" someone shouted. "New York!" I answered, and sang "The Streets of New York". Definitely a gig to remember, though I was soaking in sweat because the place was like an oven. No sooner had I said my thanks and unplugged did Lancaster County Prison hit the stage. I now changed position from performer to audience.
John Carruthers(banjo, haronica), Gerald Donnelly(guitar), Mark (Jet) DeAngelis(Bass), Joe Vazquez (guitar)and new drummer Alan What'shisname hit the stage like a hurricane. Starting with "The Patriot Game" and rocking and shaking the place all over with every song. This being a release party for their excellent new CD "Every Goddamn Time", which features 4 songs with Shane, their set was based on it. From Gerald Donnelly's fist-pumping anthem "Iron Clad" to his cover of Marty Robbins' "El Paso City" featuring the country guitar style of "Smiling" Joe Vazquez, and a Johnny Cash meets Death-Metal version of John Denver's "Country Roads" to Carruthers' outer boroughs anthem "Home Sweet Brooklyn" (Home Sweet Queens to me) to his "Ate His Thumb", a true story about the Donner Party, American settlers in the old west who had to resort to cannibalism for survival. Apparently I saw the same documentary he did! Mark De Angelis gave us "Whiskey O Whiskey" Lancaster County Prison truly rocked the house and kicked some ass.
The place grew still as the band grew silent, they announced a friend of theirs from County Tipperary, John Clarke (I think his first name was John, but his last name was definitely Clarke) joined the Prisoners for "Jug of Punch", "Black Velvet Band" and "School Days Over", psyching everyone up..............for the entrance of the special guest.
When Shane MacGowan came up on stage, the whole place went crazy. This was what we had all waited for!! He looked great, I think. His hair freshly cut and newly shaven. The band launched into several takes of "The Town I Loved So Well" in which Donnelly duets with Shane for a music video, getting all the footage they needed. They later played the song again live (or is it Memorex), also "Satan is Waiting" from the CD, and Shane classics "Lonesome Highway" and "Irish Rover". He sounded great, just like he always does, which was fine with everyone. During the show everyone was soaked in sweat. John Carruthers brought me downstairs to meet Shane! I shook his hand and told him how honored i was to meet him and play before him. He was very gracious and funny. Laughing and joking. He signed one of my gig flyers, which was all i had for him to sign. A friend of a friend took a picture of Shane with his arm around me because I forgot my camera. I will always treasure my autograph and my memories of meeting Shane.

Thanks, Kevin!!!

                                    SHANE'S  GAINED  AWARD
Actually a bit outdated but still pleasant news:
During the Ceremony held in Glasgow on 31st of May 2003 Shane MacGowan got his McGinn Award for Lifetime Achievement.
THE McGINN CONCERT AND AWARDS
are seen as an opportunity for the city and the people of Glasgow to honour the memory of one of Glasgow's and indeed one of the world's foremost folk songwriters and performers - Matt McGinn. Along with the City Wide Awards there is an international flavour to the event to mirror Glasgow's unique multicultural make-up leading up to the awards ceremony itself.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD a panel of judges drawn from the music world  nominates an individual whose work has shown the qualities of humanism, observation, humour and pathos over an extended period.
A Lifetime Achievement in the true sense of the words, Shane is generally accepted as being one of the great 20th century lyricists. This award is a fitting tribute to the man who has fought his own demons to produce some of the great folk songs of our age.
Shane MacGowan has been writing and performing music for 25 years. From the headlining days of The Pogues through to today’s solo career, Shane has always been keen to display his celebration of music in its many forms. “A man loved by millions” - his legacy as a songwriter is assured. The abiding testament to his creative genius is ‘A Fairytale of New York’ which became a Christmas anthem.

SHANE  AT NEW CD LAUNCH PARTY
Irish Rovers, Queens, New York, USA
I have been waiting for "official" reports since 12th July... Well, here's some fans' reviews. (Fans are far more disciplined, assiduous and determined than journalists):

Got to see Shane last nite for the FIRST time ever at the album release party for Lancaster County Prison's new CD "Every Time". Was not impressed with Lancaster County Prison (don't know why he would involve himself with them). In addition to several songs from the CD he did Lonesome Highway, Irish Rover and Dirty Old Town. He certainly doesn't look happy or like he was enjoying himself and I kept wondering why he was doing it at all. Didn't know what kind of shape he'd be in, he started out standing and after a few songs he sat down. I met him the day before at the bar sitting with just two other people when I went in to pick up my passes. I walked right by him until Barry the bartender pointed him out and introduced me!! He's very sweet and it was the BIGGEST THRILL of my life! Now if I could only get to see him performing without the other trashy bands life would be complete!
Astoria, USA. shane's official guestbook.

Yeah, what an atmosphere @ the rover last night....I thought LCP were really good, lots of energy, played for hours.....agreed that he did'nt look to happy to be there-maybe Shane was pissed off that the barber cut his hair/beard too short!Great Craic though and great to see Shane looking well, spoke to his missus Victoria for a while, really nice girl....I also got some great pictures which i'll send on for posting later. So All in All a great night in a great bar, just like being in Dublin.....PS:they were recordng "thetowni loved so well"with Shane last night and there was a power cut near the end and they had to start it again-Shane looked pleased!
Dublin Paul, NY. shane's official guestbook

Short people, well they certainly are at a disadvantage shooting a show. I was jealous of anyone even an inch taller. They had the advantage. So off I went to the side of the miniscule stage, packed with musicians, instruments, amps, and the loudest, fastest renditions of Lancaster County Prison’s new CD – EVERY GODDAMN TIME. The Rover was fully packed, and everyone was revved up and ready to go…despite the incredible heat and humidity. It did not matter, the crowd still hopped to the fast foot-stomping beat of the music. Just before Shane was to come on stage, a tall, groomed middle-aged man that was with him (sorry forget his name at the moment) ran up to the mike to announce Shane would be out shortly but that he would do a couple of numbers. Well, what a sight! Suddenly, this corporate looking type in a fine suit starts belting it out and jumping up and down. What a punk! What fun! Shane shuffled his way to the stage and took his place. It was good to see him. He did have a rather short hair cut though, and the beard was gone, making him look paler than ever. Astoria, you say Shane did not “look happy or like he was enjoying himself”. I would say he looked more disoriented. Being under those close stage lights that evening was an experience in itself, I’m sure it affected him too. Remember, he is not as spry as he once was, and this, being your first time seeing him live, explains your perception. As far as your comments about Lancaster Prison go, I am sorry you feel that way. They are a good bunch of guys who love to make honest music, and in my opinion that is a rare thing. You wonder why he involved himself with them? Because of mutual respect hon; they have known each other for a long time. They have opened shows for Shane and the Popes on many occasions and they are tight. Don’t worry, Shane does benefit, in many ways.
Josie Montserrat. shane's official guestbook. Superb pics by Josie

Well folks It was packed & sweaty house in the Rover Saturday Night  to launch "Every Godamm Time' the new CD release from New Yorks Finest The Lancaster County Prison featuring Shane MacGowan. The event was being filmed for a future video release. The Lancasters took the stage around 10pm and rocked the house with their usual set highlights for me were 'Patriot Game', 'El Paso City' 'Union Square' & 'Home Sweet Brooklyn'. Shane joined the boys about 11.45 and immediately launched into the forthcoming single 'The Town I Loved So Well' which was lipsynced for video purposes twice. Shane done about 8 numbers including 'The Irish Rover' & 'Lonesome Highway'. Shane was in good shape & has lost some of his recent flab and stayed behind to chat & sign autographs for hours afterwards. The Lancasters rocked the house as usual and all 200 approx in attendance danced the night away. Catch these guys when there in your area their live gigs & new CD are essential listening
Roy Foran. FOS

Lancaster was amazing - best I've ever seen them.  I was about 5 feet from the stage when Shane sauntered up.  He lokked a bit pissed (angry, not drunk... or actually both) when they did the multiple passes ast "The Town I Loved So Well".  He was amazing, they were great, it was hot (maximum occupancy 74 my ass). A couple of Bushmills put it all right...
Thomas Bennett. FOS

I left a druken sweaty mess, had a great time. Shane looked the best  ive seen him in years. I think he retired the old suit and purple shirt.

Owing to Alex Stickel I add a link to the old interview taken at Shane's tipperary cottage:

Tipperary's toddlin' lad returns home to stay

Special to The Irish American Post

8 August, 2001

After leaving Nenagh and traveling the back roads of one of the most remote places in north Tipperary, I found myself standing at the white glossed door of a 350-year-old cottage looking for Shane MacGowan. A note book was clutched tightly in my hand.
Rumors of an unaccommodating defensive rocker, who despised all journalists, came to mind and worries of a disastrous interview played nervously on my mind.

"Drinkers rejoice! Combining his Irish roots with the sprit of punk rock, former Pogues frontman Shane McGowan wrote some of the most passionate, exciting music of the 80s - with many classic songs now unavoidable standards on Boston's pub jukes. With his new band the Popes, Shane continues to write new material and perform. But many years of drink and drug have taken their toll - and engraved Shane with an enduring reputation as a man whose self-destructive streak is matched only by his musical genius. With remarkable candor, a wild-eyed and world weary McGowan discusses his past and often rambles charmingly (if somewhat incoherently) in this stunning portrait of Ireland's premiere bad boy! Featuring interviews with Nick Cave, Philip Chevron, Paul Simonon, and Shane's family and contemporaries, and including such classic songs as "If I Should Fall From Grace With God", "That Woman's Got Me Drinking", "A Rainy Night in Soho", "Dirty Old Town", "Waxie's Dargle", and many more! A good show in Deventer ! A bit short ! Once again: there's the squeeze box missing ! But Shane was in good singing form after two songs !
Let's start with some good news. It was a small veneu but very nice with a lot of nice people from different country's. Shane was in very good shape absolutely not drunk like hell, he has in mine opinion new clothes, he has lost some weight and he looks healthier than ever. The bad news: The popes, two of them where drunk to hell pissed off and stoned. Deep respect for tommy he is the best one. Thanks to mr. Paul mcGuiness for to be kind to uss. But are there no musicians in this fucking world (acordion, whistles, fiddle) who kan take the popes sound to a higher level. it sounds so bad. shane needs a better band...
Some additional impressions ! Shane went on stage in Deventer, sat on the baar stool and said: Old blue eyes is back ! Quite funny ! The he noticed someone with a cowboy hat in the audience ! He thought that was funny ! After some songs he finally put it on and sang a song with it ! If someone has pics please drop me a line ! Shane in good form, set list needs backup (songs from the new album ?), Popes need backup too (accordeone, tin whistle, violin like in the earlier Popes days) ! Besides this all in all a very entertaining evening !
Robin

the gig was shit like all the years before here in europe.in my opinion on the island their much better.its a combination of many small things like the sound of the soundsystem, the band who cant play right, seems to me they lost intrest and the fucking playlist that we allready listend hundred times before.the only reason that i go alltime is still the hope better days will come.
Sean

Couldn't agree more with the messages about Shane's gig in Oss: uninspired, unergetic and a sad sad offence to to those classic massive folkrock-tunes we all love so well. Here 's the set list for ye. Fall, R'nR Paddy, Back In The County Hell, Donegal XPress, Mother M'Croi, D.O.T. Popes Instr. Body Of An American, Greenland Whalef. More Pricks, Streams, Auld Triangle, Poor Paddy, Sickbed, Irish Rover. Perhaps the only positive surprise was the encore: Rainy Night! Shane sang this one standing, not using the chair. Too bad the band missed out - as in each and every song.

Fans' reviews (from official Shane's site guestbook):

"Just got back from the punk festival in Morecambe and I'm glad to report Shane was in fine form. He was about 20 minutes late so the band started without him (same happened at Shepards Bush). I can't remember the play list but there wasn't any new stuff played whilst Shane was on."
Hooley, Lancashire, UK

"
I was also at the 'Holidays in the sun' festival and thought also that Shane was on fine form. The reason he was late was that he got the ferry rather than plane!!! (probably the B&I ferry). Hope they play their next year as it was a great festival, with some great bands (Neck, Real McKenzies) didnt think much of Greenland Whale Fisheries though!!"

If I Should Fall From Grace: The Shane MacGowan Story
directed by Sarah Share
2001
91 MINS, Color
During the 1980s, The Pogues, led by iconic singer Shane MacGowan, electrified audiences with ballads famed for their passionate marriage of poetic storytelling and riotous delivery. Equally renowned was MacGowan's legendary self-destructive behavior. In this unflinching and unapologetic portrait by Irish producer-director Sarah Share, the ravaged yet still mesmerizing MacGowan - who reportedly started abusing drugs and alcohol at age 12 -revisits his musical career in archive film clips and discusses why he left The Pogues in 1991. "...Shane McGowan was pissed out of his tree (as well as 20 minutes late) - someone told me later that he is always like that? (I didn't know anything about him but chose to see him as I thought his music sounded like my style). I thought it was insulting to the audience to have him in the condition he was. The band tried hard & I'm sure they would have put on a high energy act if the singer had been able to stand up!"

Roger Ramjet on May 14, 2003 at 12:04:37:
"I saw McGowan's performance, and it was pitiful. If you want to see fat, incontinent drunks burn themselves with cigarettes and dribble drool down their chins I can point you to any number of pubs around Sydney. McGowan's obviously a very sick man, and a hopeless alcoholic. He belongs in a hospital, not on a stage. Poor, stupid fucker. I feel sorry for him, but those of you who glory in his long, slow suicide need shooting. Wake up to yourself."

Posted by aDELL on May 14, 2003 at 13:02:35:
"His performance was everything I was expecting, all my Irish mates warned me, I don't care if he was drunk or not, he could still sing like a madman."A drink with Shane MacGowan" is the name of his autobiography written by the man himself and his wife. All you disgusted festival goers should have a read of it, it is quite a laugh and the man is articulate and intelligent. If you don't believeme, read it!"

Posted by Roger Ramjet on May 14, 2003 at 15:01:53:
"Oh, come on - he couldn't sing worth shit. (Which is ironic because he waddled on like he'd crapped his pants.)The band was bog-ordinary pub boogie with a banjo chucked in to make it all "Irishy", McGowan was a basket case who didn't know whether he was in Byron Bay or up a pig's arse, and still you useless tools cheered him on, presumably because you thought him being a smwelly old drunk made it all "authentic". Your Irish mates will probably have a good old piss-up when he dies, play their old Pogues records and tell lies about how that got on the sauce with him. But the fact remains, he's a hopeless alco who has pissed away his talent and is slowly dying in front of you. And there's nothing glorious in that. "

Posted by Pete on May 14, 2003 at 18:40:01:
"I wonder if you hung on 'til the end of the show or were amongst the 200-300 who walked out, disgusted? I saw his show with a friend who's seen him play several times in Europe who advised 'don't even bother if he's pissed...just walk away'). We stayed. God knows why because the first four songs or so were terrible, he couldn't string two words together and then he vanished from the stage. There's absolutely nothing romantic about his alcoholism, nor was there for Dylan Thomas (..rage against the dying of the light). But he can write a song and the last 30 minutes of his show were, in my opinion, close to the most electrifying of any of the performances this year. And I beg to differ about the Popes. It was compelling and utterly confronting."

And another thing: some doubts about Tuam Sham Rock Festival. Paul Adams supposes it may be Galway Arts Festival (15 to 27 July ) where Shane & The Popes will play on 26 of July. Can't say anything. There is not a fuckin single word at official Arts Festival site (how long are they going to scratch their balls? It's june close to hand...)

                                              WHAT  FUN
"Sophie Monk is waiting for her suitcase in the arrivals hall at Melbourne Airport. Surrounded by fellow passengers, the willowy blonde doesn't notice the middle-aged man lurching towards her with the aid of a walking-stick. His wild hair and crumpled suit are the colour of cigarette ash and his face is as pale as milk. The distance between them closes until Monk, the "blonde goddess" of Australian pop, is standing just a few metres from Shane MacGowan, Ireland's ruined laureate of rock'n'roll excess.
They're blissfully unaware of each other. And the unlikely congress lasts just a few seconds. MacGowan turns on his walking stick and stomps off to the men's room; Monk grabs her luggage and scoots away to a waiting limousine. I'm left standing in the arrivals hall, feeling like I've just seen both ends of the musical rainbow.
MacGowan, who shot to fame as the leader of punk/folk group the Pogues, is famous for his disintegrating teeth and an appetite for just about anything that gets you under the table in a hurry..."
