Why Advertise On The Internet

Already the gauge is changing. Where once we said "the Internet will..." we now say " The Internet is..."  In less than five years , Internet Technology has begun to mature in to a routine part of our life. Internet, online, e-mail, e-commerce, e-business, e-banking are now not new words for most of the people.

"There will be only two kind of business in this century...

one ,business on internet /online business... second , out of business"

- Mr. Bill Gates - Microsoft

Facts & Figures

In Australia, some interesting surveys are found for internet and homepages

For the 62% who are already connected or plan to connect:

What purpose are you connecting?

The 62% who are already connected, or planned to connect, were then asked for what purpose. As indicated earlier, E-mail ranks top with research and general information close behind, followed by "selling our products/services".

A rather surprising 36% tend to use the Internet personally or for home application and it is possible that home application explains the further 22% for "education purposes" which, of course, could be tapped into by family members working from home in advanced studies.

Some interesting facts about homepages

Questions were then asked for those already connected. The answers indicated the majority were looking for further developments on the Internet, but in the meantime used the Home Page to encourage further prompts. However, only 25% indicated that they had gained worthwhile leads, and an even lower 22% made worthwhile sales.

It's early days on the Internet, so that this 22% of worthwhile sales could be considered highly satisfactory

PC and Net Penetration Increases in Australia

Mar 08 2000: Half of all households in Australia owned a PC in November 1999 and a quarter of households had Internet access, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This was an increase of 229,000 households with PCs to 3.5 million since November 1998, and an increase of 476,000 households with Net access to 1.8 million.

The number of adults who had used the Internet in the 12 months prior to being surveyed had increased by 1.8 million to 6 million, or 44 percent of adult Australians. The ABS study also found that Net users are still more likely to be young men living in urban areas.

The number of people who bought products or services online in the previous 12 months jumped from 2 percent in November 1998 to almost 6 percent of adults, or 803,000 people, in November 1999. Books or magazines were the favourite choice of 27 percent of online shoppers and 19 percent had bought computer equipment.

Online Ad Revenues Soaring Down Under

Jul 17 2000: Online advertising revenue in Australia has grown to AUS8.5 million (USD5.1 million) per month from AUS6.6 million (USD4 million) per month this time last year.

A new AdMonitor report from research group www.consult.com.au  says that second-quarter Internet advertising revenues in Australia totaled AUS22 million (USD13.2 million).

The report found that in the first 5 months of 2000, ten firms have spent more than AUS100,000 (USD 60,000) each per month on online advertising and more than 70 companies have spent AUS20,000 (USD12,000) per month. Three times more firms are now advertising online than were doing so last year.

Online advertising revenues, excluding Olympic Games-related advertising should top AUS100 million (USD60 million) this year. If this happens, Australian online advertising revenues will have increased three-fold each year since 1998.

Banking and other financial services, retail, classifieds, technology and media are the sectors generating the highest advertising revenue.
