Title of Record (1999)
1. Sand
2. Welcome to the Fold
3. Captain Bligh
4. It's Gonna Kill Me
5. The Best Things
6. Take a Picture
7. Skinny
8. I Will Lead You
9. Cancer
10. I'm Not the Only One
11. Miss Blue
My favorite of the two, it is a much more mature album then the previous one, though some claim it is heavier. The cd starts of with the instumental "Sand", but then quickly tumbles in to jugging guitars and searing lyrics in "Welcome to the Fold". "Captain Bligh" is a fast paced, beat laden piece followed by the slowerm but still edgy "It's Gonna Kill Me". The anthematic "The Best Things" is Filter through and through and was the song that made me consider looking in to them even more. The crossover hit "Take a Picture", is good, but got so much airplay, many fans thought they were going soft. The next track, probably my favorite, "Skinny", is filled with meaningful words and well matched pieces of aucostic and electric guitars. "I Will Lead You" is another fast-paced heavy song, while "Cancer" begins slow, but picks up, big time, at the end. "I'm Not the Only One" is also like "Cancer" in its flow, but still well played and "Miss Blue" ends this wonderful cd in a quiet fashion.
My Rating: 4.5 (out of 5) stars
Shortbus (1995)
1. Hey Man, Nice Shot
2. Dose
3. Under
4. Spent
5. Take Another
6. Stuck in Here
7. It's Over
8. Gerbil
9. White Like That
10. Consider This
11. So Cool
The album starts off with the hit, "Hey Man, Nice Shot", which brought the band to people's attention. This heavy piece, filled with plenty of those patented screams, is followed by another grungy work, "Dose". Probably my favorite on the cd, it is a fast paced track, and is followed by a fairly similar song, "Under". "Under" seems a tad more 'earthy' then dose, but is still a great track. Opened by a drunk message left on a machine, the lyrics of "Spent" are screached out by the leader, adding emotion, an element found in all their songs that set them apart from other bands. "Take Another" is severed by a long pause, but still is loud and meaningful. "Stuck in Here" is the "Take a Picture" of  Shortbus. The softest track, it is mostly acoustic guitar and Richard. "It's Over" is another good track, with well mixed lyrics (varying in pitch greatly) and guitars. "Gerbil" is short but sweet and "White Like That" has many words, but is continuous, without any of the breaks found in many songs on this cd. "Consider This" almost has a peaceful sound to it, while the lyrics tell otherwise and the album ends with "So Cool", which I at first ignore, but now love because of its almost eerie sound intermingled with the quiet lyrics.
