The Nine Kingdoms of Arn are home to a number of different organizations whose efforts can be felt beyond a single kingdom or island. Below are the more widely known of these organizations.
Major Organizations/Secret Societies of the Nine Kingdoms
Brotherhood of the Black Fist
A monastery devoted to the exploration of pain and death, these monks dwell in the shadows of the Darkstorm Peaks, and serve at the whim of their Elder Council. The Black Fist are often encountered outside of the Darkstorm Peaks in service to the Church of the Storm Lord.
The Crimson Magi of Gevedra
Perhaps the second largest order of arcane magic in the Nine Kingdoms, the Crimson Magi of Gevedra are made up of numerous arcane practitioners, particularly wizards and sorcerers. Although they lack the prestige of the Order Arcane, the Crimson Magi are still widely respected, particularly among those who hold ill will toward the Kingdom of Arn and its magocracy. Crimson Magi of Gevedra prefer to wear deep crimson robes or ornamentation, and avoid wearing any shades of green whenever possible. The reputation of Longlore Collegium, the largest of the Crimson Magi academies, rivals that of the High Towers of Magic in Arn itself.
Cult of the Dark Prophecy
The Cult of the Dark Prophecy is a necromantic cult driven to fulfill a prophecy of domination by restoring to the Plane Prime the Lich Queen Surgotha, an undead would-be conqueror that followed in the despotic footsteps of Lord Necron. According to rumors, in the years immediately after Surgotha's destruction by the Champions of Alaster, a High Priest in service to the Keeper of the Dead wrote of the secrets of immortality that lay under the control of Surgotha, and wrote of a vision in which Surgotha will be returned to the world of the living to raise an undead army that would conquer the Bloodwind Isles. That manuscript, if indeed it exists at all, has been lost for centuries. That hasn't stopped the Crypt Lord Arcanus from gathering together other explorers of undeath, and attempting to locate the manuscript, in the hopes of bringing this dark prophecy to pass. In exchange for this dark service, Arcanus seeks immortality from Surgotha in the form of the secrets of Lichdom.
Cultists of the Dark Prophecy pursue a number of necromantic prestige classes, primarily the Spectral Loremaster prestige class from Necromancy: From The Grave by Mongoose Publishing. They are drawn together in their mutual quest to restore the Lich Queen Surgotha and take their place as immortal retainers under the reign of the Dark Queen Restored.
Followers of Sandamos
The Followers of Sandamos is a fairly widespread network of cabals led by devout students of the Grand Summoner Sandamos. These small cliques of infernal summoners work with Demons, both rogues and those bound by the Grand Compact, as they dabble in the Dark Arts. While it is rumored that these cults are working together toward perfecting a great ritual that will open the Plane Prime to the dwellers of the Infernus, most often authorities have found that these cults are often working alone. Despite how often the Followers are hunted out and disbanded or destroyed, they always seem to return. Sandamos, the Grand Summoner that started these cults, has not been seen since the collapse of the Blood Temple of Arrendra some two decades ago, and is rumored to be dead, perhaps even feeding the last demon he attempted to summon.
Followers of Sandamos pursue the Summoner prestige class detailed in Sword and Sorcery's Relics and Rituals. In addition to standard spells, the Cultists practice infernal summoning rituals as detailed in Demonology: The Dark Road by Mongoose Publishing, except that the Summoner prestige class replaces that of the Demonologist.
Heralds of Alaster
Once dedicated to the service of the Queen of Alaster, with the destruction of their island home by the Lich Queen Surgotha, the Heralds have hidden themselves in other lands. Now, they form the nucleus for a secret society devoted to the preservation of balance and the innate belief that good must triumph over evil.
Heralds of Alaster pursue the Herald prestige class detailed in Dragon Magazine Annual #5.
House of the Black Rose
An elite assassin's guild purportedly based in Yemna, the Black Rose are often sought for complicated and discreet assassinations. It is said that no one has ever survived the attentions of the Black Rose, and no one has ever been able to stop the Black Rose from accomplishing their goals.
Assassins of the Black Rose pursue the Assassin prestige class detailed in Dungeon Master's Guide.
Hunters of the Blood Moon
Several bands of lycanthropic followers of the Green Man, the Hunters of the Blood Moon often hunt intelligent prey under the full moon. In some areas, local villagers have even begun to offer tribute in the form of a sacrifice to the Hunters in order to protect the rest of the village from their monthly ritual hunting.
Lords of the Iron Circle
The so-called Lords of the Iron Circle are a loose affiliation of privateer captains and peasant heroes that are devoted to the resistance of the rule of the Emerald Throne, and the collapse of Arn's control over the Nine Kingdoms. They are allied with the Freedom Fighters of Dalmora and the resistance movement known as Erestia's Wrath.
Mage-Monks of the Order of Ashiru
The Order of Ashiru are a secretive order of mage-monks devoted to the teachings of the first Mystic Warrior, Master Ashiru. Master Ashiru taught that the path of arcane spellcasting and martial arts can be quite effective when combined, and instructed his students to master their union. In the times since Master Ashiru's Ascendance to His Perfect Self, the philosophy of the Order has grown to encompass a general protection of magic, and defending the world from the ravages of powerful magic. Toward that end, the Ashiru have been known to both secretly and openly collect and hide away powerful artifacts and relics that could be used to wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting world. The location of the grand monastery of the Order is magically kept secret and hidden, to prevent evil forces from attempting to acquire the items that are held inside.

Order of Slayers
The Order of Slayers are a militant brotherhood of demon hunters. In essence, there are actually three Orders of Slayers: The White Order, the Grey Order and the Black Order, each dedicated to differing principles (good, neutral or evil) in the pursuit of their common goal: the destruction of any Infernal presence on the Plane Prime. The bane of the denizens of the Infernus, Slayers seek out demons and their spawn, and remove them from the Plane Prime with extreme prejudice. Because Slayers are constantly exposed to demonic forces, they always run the risk of being tainted. However, Slayers have developed a number of rituals designed to maintain their purity. They lead highly disciplined and ofttimes lonely lives, for their chosen foes are quite deadly and vengeful.

The Order Arcane of Arn (Arcanists)
Members of the Order Arcane of Arn tend to be called Arcanists by the general populace, due to their very visible strength in the arcane arts. Within the Kingdom of Arn, magical accomplishments are the key to elevating one's social status. Becoming a member of the Order Arcane is the equivalent of joining Arnian aristocracy. Indeed, the only spellcasters more highly respected in Arn are the Archmages that make up the Grand Covenant of Magi, and the Empress-Mage herself, who rules from the Emerald Throne of Lhor. Arcanists tend to wear the green robes of their station in public, and are often accompanied by bodyguards and servants of various forms and fashions. While mostly wizards comprise the ranks of the Order Arcane, some sorcerers, bards, and others of some arcane talent (and the Arcane Preparation feat) can be found among the Arcanists' numbers.
Comprised of the elite noble class of the Magocracy of Arn, the Order Arcane has extended its presence far beyond Arnian borders. Many an island kingdom have at least one Arcane Enclave, where the green-clad Arcanists sell their magical wares, offer arcane training, and provide alchemical and artificer laboratories to arcanists, all at reasonable rates. The Arcane Enclaves return some of their profits (typically 1% of all local trade) to the local government, and often provide some magical support to the local military forces, based on the agreements reached between Arn and the local government. The Order Arcane uses these fairly conducive offers to integrate themselves into the local area, allowing them a base of operations for tasks dedicated to the will of the Emerald Throne of Arn. Dabbling in local politics, the Order often uses its position to sway local support in the favor of their own personal goals.
The Order Arcane requires the local government to agree to a minimum of three laws before establishing an Enclave:
- The Right of Sanctuary recognizes the territory of the Enclave as Arnian soil as befitting an embassy of Arn, whatever rights may be current granted a particular Kingdom of the Empire, and grants Arn the ability to follow and enforce their own kingdom's laws within the Enclave. (Within the Nine Kingdoms of Arn, this Right is automatically assumed, as the entire kingdom supposedly belongs to Arn anyway. This right is primarily required to be spelled out in the smaller islands that are not part of the Empire.) Extradition rights are often included in negotiations, to prevent criminals from abusing the Right of Sanctuary. These laws include the practice of slavery, as the Magelords of Arn tend to be evil as well as lawful, and the Right of Sanctuary also includes the right of Arcanists to transport their slaves to and from the Enclaves.
- The Right of Trade establishes that the Enclave will sell certain magical and non-magical items at normal prices (local governments are offered 10% off to encourage Arnian magical reliance), and can accept slaves as payment. (Many good-aligned governments dictate that the slaves must either be willing to enter into slavery by their own free will, or be a condemned criminal of some form of high justice crime.) The Right of Trade also gaurantees the Order Arcane the ability to sell their magical services as spellcasters in the local market, as limited by the Right of Creation.
- The Right of Creation defines the items that the Arcane Order can provide through their Enclaves. The Enclaves can only provide potions, scrolls (up to 4th level), wands, +1 armor, +1 weapons, and minor wondrous items. (Many Enclaves have been known to sell 0-level spell scrolls at half market value, one such spell for each item of a more powerful type purchased.) The Enclaves do not sell any items that obviously have criminal purpose or are overly destructive, nor does the Order sell any item valued at over 2000gp, due to the loss in time and resources that could be used to create more minor items for sell. All items purchased from an Enclave bare the mark of the Order Arcane, and a sigil representing the Enclave where the item was created.
Demographically, most metropolis-sized cities (90%) in the Bloodwind Isles have an Enclave, as do many large cities (75%), about half the smaller cities (50%), a third of all large townships (30%), and the occasional small township (10%). The typical population of the Enclave represents about 1% of the local population. Half are mundanes in service to their magely rulers, and the other half are non-noble arcane casters and Arcanists. The local Arcane Lord (and Ambassador of the Magocracy of Arn to the local government) is required to be a member of the Order Arcane. If there are several such members, internal political manipulations often determine which Arnian noble holds that honor.

The Stone Circle
A growing number of the druids and rangers of the Isle of Fey, Naeben, have come to realize that in these trying times, they must undertake a more vigilant and proactive approach to preserving nature and protecting the fey. To this end, they have formed the Stone Circle, and actively work outside the Isle of Fey to protect and preserve the balance they seek to maintain on Naeben.
Lesser Organizations/Secret Societies of the Nine Kingdoms
Brotherhood of Death
A small martial society of tattooed monks devoted to the service of the Keeper of the Dead, these monks are often found in the company of skull-masked clerics of the Keeper. Though not as prevalent as the Brotherhood of the Black Fist, their single-minded devotion to their patron priests and to the sanctity of their own order often make them forminable enemies.
Monks of the Brotherhood of Death can multiclass freely as Clerics of the Keeper of the Undead, and often pursue the Devoted Defender prestige class detailed in Sword And Fist.
Spelldancers of Arrendra
Practicing an ancient form of magic in the foothills of the Arrendran mountains, the Romm tribal order of Spelldancers descended from a form of arcane magics that is also practiced among the elves of the Erestian Enclave. It is said in stories spread among the Romm that, in the old days, one Spelldancer taught her half-elven daughter, Valeriana Goldvine, the ways of the Spelldance. After decades of adventuring, Valeriana settled among the barbaric tribes of the Romm that inhabits the Arrendran Range. In the passage of time, having no children of her own, she taught the more worthy of the Romm bards and adepts the ways of the Spelldance, and thus the tradition has grown and spread among the Romm tribes.
