"I attune myself to the four elements of Nature -- Earth, Air, Fire, Water -- and to the fifth element, Spirit, which is the energy that connects all. I see these Elements in Nature -- the Earth in the soil and rocks; the Air in the winds and atmosphere; the Fire as the lightning, fires, and electricity; the Water in the springs, rivers, oceans, rain, and other waters on the planet; and the Spirit as Divine Unity. I also see these Elements as aspects of Self -- my physical body and physiology is my Earth; my intellect and thoughts my Air; my will and actions my Fire; my emotions and feelings my Water; and my Inner Self, my Soul, is my Spirit. I endeavor to keep myself healthy and in balance in all these parts of Self. I work toward a restoring of balance of the Elements in the environment."

The Problem of the Pentacle
The pentacle is a wonderful representation of Pagan philosophy because it
symbolizes the importance we place on all the natural forces and how they
come together to create our existence and the cycles of life. I love the
way it places the Earth and Fire elements as the base of the star - kind
of like saying we are "grounded" or kept stable by these things;
then the two middle height points are Air and Water, the elements that flow
in and out of our bodies, lungs and physical surroundings; then the Life
Force or Spirit placed at the top - the thing that makes it all come together
into a living, feeling being. The part that can look back and contemplate
itself and enjoy being alive. I have been frustrated by the fact that most
people raised in our culture have been taught that the pentacle is a symbol
of evil. They attribute it to Devil worship, when ironically, the Christians
created this devil worship that they say it represents. I see Jesus fish
on cars and want so badly to put a symbol of my path where all can see it,
but will they misunderstand? I feel that we need another symbol - an expression
of our faith in Mother Earth and in the natural cycles and in our own power
for good - something that has not been taken and used for evil. I was given
a very good suggestion from some friends: to use the Goddess symbol of the
three moons joined together. I will probably take this advice, however,
I still hope that the pentacle can be understood by more people. Here is
a self-explanatory graphic of our precious symbol - made without the circle
so that it can be used in situations where prejudice runs strong, and hopefully
it could serve as a diplomatic tool to promote understanding. If you know
of anywhere you could display it, please copy it onto your computer and
use it wherever you like, but please give me a by line (drawn by Gillian
Durham). My goal in drawing it was for it to be seen.
(if the picture is not working, please e-mail me and let me know. I will send you a copy of the graphic.
